Joe Root (Player of the Match, 64* off 41 balls): "It did get a bit tight, we were controlling things well but suddenly, things turned tough! I thought that the pitch played well actually, but it is more a problem in the head when the wickets start falling. Happy to be on the winning side and getting the team to the top three."
5:23 PM Local Time, 9:53 PM IST: Trent Rockets win by 3 wickets
Joe Root - 64* (41) | Samuel Cook - 2/17 Stephen Eskinazi - 53 (42) | Chris Green - 2/34
TRENT ROCKETS HAVE QUALIFIED FOR THE PLAYOFFS AND WE HAVE OUR TOP THREE OF THE HUNDRED 2025. What a finish! You couldn't write a script like this! Joe Root, you are a magician! This was a chase that Trent Rockets absolutely threw away, but one man, and one man alone, stood up and said, "Not today."
We all watched in disbelief as they went from cruising to collapsing, losing wicket after wicket in a state of sheer panic. The Welsh Fire, against all odds, had found a way back into this game. It was all set up for a monumental choke, but then you look at Joe Root. He was calm, he was composed, and he was absolutely magnificent.
He absorbed all the pressure, watched his teammates crumble around him, and then, with the game on the line, he pulled it off. He reminded us all why he is one of the greatest batters of his generation. It doesn't matter what the format is, Test cricket or The Hundred, he has the temperament and the class to win you a game. What a player. What a finish.
It was a tale of two innings, and ultimately, one man. The Trent Rockets have secured a place in the playoffs thanks to a match-winning performance from Joe Root.
Coming to the first innings, the Welsh Fire's innings was a rollercoaster. They lost Steven Smith and Jonny Bairstow, to the unlikely hero Sam Cook, who had been hammered in his last outing. But a fantastic 97-run partnership between Stephen Eskinazi (53) and Tom Abell (48) completely turned the game around, pushing the Welsh Fire to a respectable total of 150.
In response, the Trent Rockets' chase got off to a dream start, despite an early moment of chaos. Joe Root was dismissed by David Payne on a duck, but a no-ball call gave him a lifeline and he punished it with a six off the free-hit. From there, the Rockets looked to be cruising, but a sudden collapse saw them lose several quick wickets, including a double-wicket set from Chris Green and then from David Payne. It all came down to a tense final set with 14 needed from it.
But with his team on the brink of a monumental choke, Joe Root held his nerve. He showed a different gear, guiding his team home with an unbeaten 64, sealing a thrilling three-wicket victory and a spot in the playoffs.
19.4 Chris Green to Sam Hain, VICTORY TO THE ROCKETS! THEY QUALIFY IN THE TOP THREE! Full toss again around off. Hain charged down the track and slammed it over cover point to find the gap for a boundary!
19.3 Chris Green to Joe Root, full toss on middle-stump. Root sits down and heaves it to deep backward square for just one!
That is just brilliant from Joe Root! Ice Cold!
19.2 Chris Green to Joe Root, FOUR RUNS! ROOT IS DOING THE JOB FOR HIS TEAM! Back of a length around off. Root comes down the wicket and hoicks it wide of long-on again for a boundary!
Cometh the hour, cometh the man!
19.1 Chris Green to Joe Root, SIX RUNS! ROOT IS THE MAN! Good length and flat around off. Root advances and hammers it flat and over deep long-on for maximum!
Chris Green with the ball in hand. Root on strike.
A double-wicket blow in the penultimate set, and the Welsh Fire have snatched the momentum. It's 14 needed from the last 5 balls. Joe Root is still there, but he's running out of partners. The Rockets have absolutely made a mockery of this chase.
Oh, you cannot be serious! The Trent Rockets have completely unraveled here.
19.0
18.5 David Payne to Sam Hain, hat-trick ball, round the wicket, good length, slow and following the batter. Hain misses the clip to leg here by backing away but they then run through for a leg-bye!
Sam Hain batting at 9th position
David Payne on a hat-trick!
What are we seeing here in Cardiff. Rockets are in a clear panic here and are paying the price.
David Willey has been dismissed for 0 runs off 1 balls
18.4 David Payne to David Willey, over the wicket, WILLEY IS OUT NOW! WELSH FIRE ARE IN IT, BIG TIME! Full and slow outside off. The big shot through the line on the front foot gets miscued. Long-off settles under it and takes an important catch!
In walks the skipper. He has a big job at his hands now.
