Released in 2011, Minecraft is an old game but still remains largely popular, with millions of concurrent players every month. Nearly 13 years since it was first released, the sandbox game has a long and interesting history that involves its developers, iconic features and how they came into existence, and even some myths and massive trends.

This article explores some fun facts and trivia about Minecraft that new players might not know about.

Some fun trivia about Minecraft

1) Mythical Herobrine character

Herobrine was part of the scariest and most fascinating mythical stories that plagued the Minecraft community for a while when the game was still fresh. Started as a creepypasta, Herobrine was rumored to be a super-intelligent character that would secretly live in most single-player worlds with the ability to break and place blocks, just like a regular player.

The character looked exactly like Steve, but it had white, empty eyes. There are still debates about whether Herobrine was a myth or a real entity. Whichever way, it remains one of the most interesting stories of Minecraft.

2) Aether realm

Aether realm was a custom dimension that was accessible through a mod several years ago when Minecraft was still new. However, since the playerbase at the time was not fully aware of modding the game, many saw videos of players activating the aether portal and stepping into a new realm. However, when they tried it in the vanilla version, it would not work.

This became a meme of sorts and is still used today, while the official Aether mod quickly gained popularity and became one of the most beloved in the community.

3) Horses' first implementation as cows' texture pack

When Minecraft was still new, there were many mobs considered staples but were not even present in the game. One of them was a horse. Back in 2013, developers at Mojang Studios humorously added horses as cows' texture pack in an April Fools version.

This was the first iteration of horses in the game. Soon after, they were added to the 1.6.1 update.

4) Minecraft was called 'Cave Game'

Back in early 2009, when Notch created the very first version of the game, it was not called Minecraft. Rather, it was named 'Cave Game.' The in-game world was made up only of grass and cobblestone blocks, with no mobs, HUD, or items. However, soon after the game was first created, Notch and his team of developers quickly started adding features to it.

5) Creepers were invented from a failed pig model

In late 2009, when Notch was adding new features to the game, he tried to create a model for a pig but accidentally created a weird model that did not look anything like a real-life animal. He found the model 'creepy' and decided to keep it for a future mob. Later, he invented the now iconic hostile mob, Creeper.

6) Enchanted golden apples used to be craftable

For three years after Minecraft was released, from 2012 to 2015, the overpowered enchanted golden apples were craftable by players. A user was able to combine one apple and eight gold blocks to create one enchanted golden apple.

However, in snapshot 15w44a, this feature was removed, and it has become extremely rare since then.

7) Plan to add a red dragon

When Notch was still in Mojang, he planned to add a red dragon, which would be less dangerous than the Ender Dragon. However, after he left the company, the idea of a new dragon faded and was never implemented by future employees of Mojang.

Of course, there are now hundreds of mods and modpacks that add a bunch of new dragons for players to explore and interact with.
