Minecraft builders are constantly coming up with innovative ways to use blocks that don't always get much love, and this point was proven once more in a recent post on the game's subreddit. On April 21, 2024, the user u/bubbaflubba2 shared a completed build of Paris' Eiffel Tower constructed out of mud brick blocks. It was definitely an unconventional build, but players were impressed with the final results.

Although Minecraft's mud bricks may not materially make sense for an Eiffel Tower in the game (since the real-world structure is made of wrought iron), they certainly capture the color scheme quite well. Some players suggested that weather copper may have been a more appropriate block choice, but considering mud bricks don't get used as much as some blocks, this build shows that they have plenty to offer.

Minecraft fans were certainly surprised by the block choice overall, and many felt that the mud bricks' warm color fit the Eiffel Tower build very well. Iron blocks may have been more authentic to the real-world tower, but the in-game iron blocks are a bit too bright and metallic to capture the tower's actual coloration, so it appears that u/bubbaflubba2 had a solid understanding of recreating the landmark.

Why don't mud blocks get used much in Minecraft?

When mud was introduced in Minecraft 1.19, a collection of new block variants came with it. While some builders have certainly ventured into using mud blocks or their variants like mud bricks and packed mud, builds featuring mud have been a bit scarce from the building community. But why is this the case?

One reason could be that since mud blocks have low durability and blast resistance in Minecraft (0.5 points in both categories), they aren't ideal for a survival shelter since they can be demolished quite easily, intentionally or not. Additionally, while mud blocks are relatively simple to make, they don't have the most eye-catching coloration compared to the likes of concrete or terracotta.

Despite all of these perceived flaws, builds like the Eiffel Tower that u/bubbaflubba2 are able to show that there is certainly still a place for mud blocks in a wide range of builds. While players should certainly not feel compelled to use these blocks in future builds, experimenting with them at the very least might be worth a try, and you might be surprised with the results.

Truly, mud bricks or other mud blocks may never be considered some of the most beautiful blocks in Minecraft, but they shouldn't be ruled out completely. There's still much they can accomplish on the aesthetic front despite their lack of durability.
