Minecraft players are introduced to a ton of new and useful items throughout the game. These can be tools, weapons, armor, shields, and more. Almost every usable item in the game has a durability meter, which tracks how much longer that item can be used.

When a piece of gear or any item runs out of durability, it breaks and is unusable from that point onwards. The first instinct of many players is to move quickly and craft a spare tool, weapon, piece of armor, or item. However, many players make use of the in-game methods of repairing an item. This article will focus on three such methods.

Item repairing in Minecraft: Three methods to consider

The following three methods may or may not utilize a player's experience points in order to repair any piece of gear they want to be repaired.

1) Crafting grid

The first method involves one of the most recognizable menus in the entire game: the crafting grid. If a player has two of the same items with depleted durability on both of them, they can combine them inside the crafting grid of a crafting table in order to repair them. The amount that the repair is based on how much their durability bars were before the repair process.

2) Grindstone

The grindstone is a block that is used to repair or disenchant enchanted gear. Players primarily use it to remove enchantments they have no use for. However, the grindstone is a perfectly good block to help with the repair of any tool, weapon, or piece of armor in the game. This method is similar to the first method. Players need to put two identical pieces of gear inside the grindstone, and a repaired version will appear in the block's third slot.

3) Anvil

One of the biggest features common among the first two methods of gear repair is that if an enchanted item or piece of gear is being repaired, it loses any and all enchantments it is imbued with. An anvil, however, is immune to this feature.

Anvils are some of the most expensive blocks in the game, requiring a total of thirty-one iron ingots to craft. While the method of repair remains the same, with one partially damaged item in each slot, the output can be a massively improved piece of gear or item. This is due to enchantments stacking up and being combined along with the item itself.

For example, suppose a player decides to repair a damaged diamond sword imbued with the Sharpness 4 enchantment and pairs that sword with another damaged sword enchanted with Unbreaking 3. In that case, there is a strong possibility that the resulting sword will be imbued with both enchantments and maybe even a better version of said enchantments.

Repairing is an important and underrated activity. Players are liable to waste a ton of resources if they decide to craft a fresh and new item after the previous version depletes its durability. Instead, they can save a ton of time and resources by repairing their gear.
