Bungie hints at a different ammo type for Auto Rifles in Destiny 2

Since their inception, Auto Rifles in Destiny 2 have always used primary ammo. Although these weapons have infinite reserves at this point, they've been rolling in and out of the meta with every seasonal update. Ammo types always determine the efficacy of a weapon in the game. Given that Auto Rifles use primary ammo, they're not the best choice, barring a few Exotics and legendary weapons.

Apart from determining the efficiency, ammo types also determine the amount of damage that a weapon can deal. Based on the hints dropped by Bungie in their latest blog post, the Destiny 2 Auto Rifles could be getting a new ammo type soon.

Destiny 2 Auto Rifles might be getting a different ammo type soon

As of now, there are only a handful of weapons that have multiple ammo types in Destiny 2. For example, the Arbalest is a Kinetic Linear Fusion Rifle but uses Special Ammo, unlike the other Linear Fusion Rifles that use Heavy Ammo.

Similarly, all the bows in the game use Primary Ammo, but there exists a bow known as the Leviathan's Breath, which uses Heavy Ammo. The same holds true for certain Shotguns like the Tractor Cannon, which uses Heavy Ammo, unlike its other legendary counterparts. The list is endless.

However, as of now, there isn't any Auto Rifle that uses a different type of ammo in Destiny 2. Based on the hints made by Bungie, there's no telling when a weapon with a different ammo type will be introduced, but one is definitely in the works.

There's also a huge question mark on the type of ammo the weapon will use. It could use Special Ammo or Heavy Ammo. The latter would definitely make this weapon archetype a strong DPS alternative, but that would probably push Machine Guns into a corner.

However, making an Auto Rifle that uses Special Ammo could introduce a new dynamic to Destiny 2. Apart from Trace Rifles, there aren't any fast-firing weapons that use the said ammo type. Yes, there are other weapons like Shotguns and Fusion Rifles that use Special Ammo, but their rate of fire isn't as fast as an Auto Rifle.

With just one season left in the Lightfall expansion, it's unlikely that this weapon will go live in Season 23. Bungie will probably be reserving this weapon for The Final Shape, which is the last expansion in the Light vs Darkness saga.
