The Elder Scrolls Online, ZeniMax Online Studios' critically acclaimed MMORPG, frequently introduces a lot of new content through expansions and DLCs like new classes, gameplay systems, and achievements. The title takes place in the shared universe of other games in the series, making it part of a beloved franchise.

The upcoming 2024 Global Reveal livestream will unveil the title's next expansion. With the anticipation of its 10th anniversary, many wonder if The Elder Scrolls Online is free-to-play. This article will address such questions and what newcomers can expect from its monetization model.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Expansions, DLCs, and ESO Plus

The Elder Scrolls Online is not free-to-play, as you are required to buy the base game. Additionally, it frequently releases new expansions and DLCs. You can buy the complete edition to acquire all the expansions and the base game. However, the DLCs require a separate purchase.

Does The Elder Scrolls Online require a subscription to play?

The title has a subscription called ESO Plus, offering many benefits in different facets of gameplay. However, the game doesn't follow a subscription-based model like Final Fantasy 14. Therefore, ESO Plus is not necessary.

That said, there are over 20 paid DLCs currently in the game. It used to follow an annual story arc system, where the storyline started with a new expansion that unfolded over the year through these DLCs. You don't need them to experience the world of Nirn and have fun playing. However, the story's structure incentivizes you to get them.

Buying all the available DLCs for the game can get extremely expensive. The ESO Plus subscription solves this issue by granting you access to all of them. Furthermore, it gives you access to a Craft bag, providing unlimited storage space for crafting materials and resources in the game.

Many would argue that it's impossible or frustrating to level up a crafting profession in the title due to limited storage space. So, while a subscription to ESO Plus is not mandatory to play the game, you will have a significantly worse time without it.

Is The Elder Scrolls Online pay-to-win?

Some aspects of the title also rely heavily on the cash shop, such as Housing, collecting mounts, armor motifs, weapon styles, and Assistants. While you can acquire mounts, weapons, and armor by just playing the game, they are nowhere near as appealing as the ones from the cash shop. These superior alternatives make the title lean more toward being pay-to-win.

Assistants, on the other hand, are only accessible as a pay-for-convenience feature.
