Rare, the creator of Sea of Thieves, has faced a significant amount of community backlash regarding seasonal delays, with players complaining about the content or the lack thereof. Seeing the steady loss in player count, gamers might be wondering if Sea of Thieves is dead. But despite all the negatives, loyal fans of the game have stuck around till the latest season 10 (as of 13 January, 2024).

Having received a few noteworthy updates in Season 10, Rare has promised a few core gameplay updates in Season 11, which is set to release on 23 January, 2024. 5 reasons to get back to Sea of Thieves in 2024

1) New guild system

After being delayed for 3 months, Season 10 finally introduced a Guild system to Sea of Thieves where players can pledge themselves and their ships to a guild (a max of 3 guilds can be joined at once). Once pledged, players can sail for a guild and can choose among the ships pledged for that specific guild.

Gamers can earn a reputation for their guild by taking part in World Events. Upon reaching Guild level 15, players will be granted the opportunity to sail as a Guild Emissary and earn even more rewards.

2) Safer seas for Tall tales

Rare tried to make Sea of Thieves a title that can be enjoyed by casual and hardcore fans alike. However, it used to be quite hard for casual gamers to participate in Tall Tales in peace since other players had the freedom to disrupt and interrupt said Tall Tales. That is why, to make casual playstyle disruption-free, Rare has opened up Safer Seas.

Before setting sail, gamers will be asked to choose either High Seas or Safer Seas. Upon choosing the new Safer Seas, players are put into their private lobby where only their crew can exist. This way, gamers can continue their Tall Tales or learn the basics of Sea of Thieves without having to engage in PvP battles right off the bat.

3) New Voyages

Voyages are essentially a collection of quests that pirates of Sea of Thieves can undertake. They come with various difficulties and can be obtained via Trading Companies at any Outpost on the seas. They consist of numerous chapters and belong to different trading companies like Gold Hoarders, Order of the Souls, and Reaper's Bones, with all providing reputation and rewards.

With Season 10, Sea of Thieves has introduced a new voyage called the Call of Siren Song. This new voyage offers a challenge to all who accept the quest on the high seas and races to find the one and only Skull of Siren Song. Players and crews then race against each other to find, loot, and bring the Skull to Captain Briggsy while competing against other players and ships who may or may not be taking part in this voyage.

4)Quality of Life updates

Rare has updated their game with notable QoL changes that have brought about a sense of comfort among players for a long time. Previously, disconnected players would lose their inventory upon rejoining the session, which has now been taken care of. Players can now continue the session with the inventory that they had before a disconnection happened.

Furthermore, gamers can now collect loot from barrels faster by taking a storage crate and being able to fill up the barrel or the crate with just one button. This loot transfer method is possible with all kinds of resource crates and promises the pirates in Sea of Thieves a faster time gathering loot.

There is also an additional method of purchasing more resources like wood, cannonballs, fruits, and meats by going to the shipwright on an outpost and accessing them under the resources tab. An additional QoL has been introduced wherein players can repair their rowboats when they suffer damage.

5)Updates to core gameplay

Rare has confirmed that they heard the voices of the community and acknowledged that the amount of time required per session to play Sea of Thieves is fairly long, making it less appealing to casual players with limited time on their hands. Therefore, with Season 11, they have plans to update the time it takes for casual and hardcore player sessions alike.

After the release of Season 11 (planned for 23 January 2024), gamers will be able to access a newer session length owing to a change in limited-time voyages. With the removal of limited-time voyages that required long sessions to complete, Rare is trying to make the game appealing to a wider range of audience, making sure that the seas welcome all gamers who want to try out the life of a pirate at sea.
