Riley Dederick Kern Herbst is an American professional stock car racing driver. He competed full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, driving the No. 98 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing, and part-time in the NASCAR Cup Series, driving the No. 15 Ford Mustang Dark Horse for Rick Ware Racing. Born on February 24, 1999, Riley debuted in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2018 at the Iowa 250, Iowa, driving for JGR. He debuted in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at the 2018 Eaton 200, Gateway Motorsports Park, finishing 8th.

Riley was announced to have signed with Rick Ware Racing to debut in the Cup Series in the No. 15 Ford at the 2023 Daytona 500, finishing tenth despite being involved in a multi-car crash, becoming one of the five drivers in NASCAR history to score a Top 10 finish in their Cup Series, Xfinity, and Truck Series starts. Riley was awarded the 2017 ARCA Racing Series Rookie of the Year and won the 2023 Baja 1000 Trophy Truck Spec Class Winner.

Riley is from a family with off-road racing roots, with father Troy, grandfather Jerry, and uncles Ed and Tim, all participants in a desert racing competition such as the Baja 500 and Baja 1000. They were also inducted into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

Riley Herbst’s Grandfather

Jerry Herbst, Riley’s grandfather, started the family’s legacy in desert racing with fellow Las Vegas businessman Mart Collins. Jerry Herbst has three sons - Ed Herbst, Tim Herbst, and Troy Herbst. Jerry is the son of the owner of Martin Oil, Edward R. Herbst, who was credited with becoming the P.T. Barnum of gasoline by introducing unusual marketing strategies and undercutting competition with low prices. Together, Jerry and his sons own the Terrible Herbst company. It is a privately held American gas station company with headquarters in Paradise, Nevada, United States.

Riley Herbst’s Uncles

Ed and Tim, elder brothers of Troy, Riley’s father, teamed together for around 20 years to become the all-time winning team in SCORE Trophy-Truck history. Ed and Tim have won 11 races in SCORE Trophy-Truck, and four of the 20 season championships in the marquee desert racing class for high-tech, 850 horsepower unlimited production trucks in 1999, 2000, 2002, and 2003.
