Melancon was initially drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 30th round of the 2003 MLB draft. He declined the offer so that he could attend the University of Arizona. He was then drafted by the New York Yankees in the ninth round of the 2006 MLB draft and made his major league debut with them in 2009.
