Gym Leaders are supposed to be the best in every Pokemon region, but they rarely live up to the standards expected of them.

When walking into any Gym, a trainer should be prepared to face a high-level monotype team. Some teams, though, lack serious coverage and can be countered by hilariously weak Pokemon.

This article will attempt to shed light on five Gym Leaders who can usually be defeated using run-of-the-mill strategies, especially in nuzlockes.

5) Morty

One shouldn’t be blamed for thinking that a Gym Leader with Gengar would be tough to beat. However, Gengar can be countered by some simple strategies, especially in Heart Gold and Soul Silver.

In the Generation II remakes, the only attacking moves Morty’s Gengar knows are Sucker Punch and Shadow Ball. Since Sucker Punch only works if the opponent uses an attacking move, Normal types are free to use whichever status move they want.

In fact, a level 15 Hoothoot with Insomnia can easily counter Gengar.

4) Norman

On the surface, it looks like Norman should give players a tough battle. It was built up to be an epic fight throughout the game, with Norman being the main character’s father.

The reality, though, is far from it.

Slaking is incredibly strong, fast and durable, but its Truant ability prevents it from being a large threat. Any Pokemon with Protect can attack on the turns and win the battle with ease. The same goes for anything with the move Dig.

3) Bugsy

While Scyther can be difficult to deal with, it’s not as scary considering it’s being supported by a Metapod and a Kakuna. Any trainer with a Special Attacker should get a free win against Bugsy after they deal with Scyther, who is also countered by a Rock-type.

2) Blaine

This Gym Leader tends to be easy not because of the battle itself, but due to its location. Blaine is the Fire-type Gym Leader, which means he is weak to Water-types.

Considering trainers have to surf to get to Cinnabar Island, there is virtually no excuse for losing to Blaine.

1) Byron

It’s odd to think of a Steel-type Gym Leader being easy to beat when Steel is one of the best types in the game. The fact remains, though, that no Gym Leader is going to be a threat if Bastiodon is their ace.

It’s bad enough for Pokemon to have one 4x weakness: Bastiodon has two. Anything with a Ground or Fighting move should make quick work of it.
