WWE has showcased several iconic couples throughout the years. While some only remained on television, there were also times when these storylines came true. However, there were also pairings that fans didn't get to see or were abruptly cut before they even fully developed.
Edge and Lita, Dominik Mysterio and Liv Morgan, Chyna and Eddie Guerrero, are just some iconic and unforgettable couples fans saw on WWE television. While their romance didn't make it off-screen, there are still pairings that did get together in real life like Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, The Miz and Maryse, Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch, and more. Interestingly, some former and current superstars were also set to be partnered with other names.
For this list, we will look at three canceled WWE romantic storylines.
#3. The beginning stages of Nia Jax and Enzo Amore's romantic storyline started
In late 2017 and early 2018, WWE began to display some teasing and flirtation between Nia Jax and Enzo Amore. However, this didn't become a full-on romantic storyline as the latter was suddenly suspended and released in 2018. According to the former superstar, another name was even supposed to join the storyline.
According to the WWE Women's Champion, that storyline was supposed to see them officially become a couple and for Alexa Bliss to get involved in their romantic storyline by cheating with Amore. This would lead to a match at WrestleMania 34 where he will act as a guest referee.
#2. Cody Rhodes and Kaitlyn were supposed to be a couple because of a simple tweet
In 2017, former WWE writer Kevin Eck revealed some of the pairings and storylines that were pitched but never happened. Among those was a possible romance between Cody Rhodes and former superstar Kaitlyn. Eck noted that at the time, the former Divas Champion was tweeting about how much she loved men with mustache, which would then lead to her being attracted to Cody.
This pairing would lead to a feud between Cody and his then-tag team partner Damien Sandow, who would resent her for stealing their "bromance" away. Although this storyline was teased, it never got too far as The Bella Twins returned, who Vince McMahon paired with Cody instead.
#1. Dean Ambrose almost didn't make his WWE main roster debut with The Shield
Another romantic storyline that Kevin Eck shared didn't make it on television was between AJ Lee and Dean Ambrose (AKA Jon Moxley). This would have been during the time when Lee and Daniel Bryan (AKA Bryan Danielson) were going to get married in July 2012. The former writer shared that Bryan would have gotten AJ committed to a mental institution due to her "craziness."
While spending time there, she would meet a fellow patient, Dean Ambrose who would then return with her on the main roster and be WWE's Bonnie and Clyde. However, AJ turned this down as she didn't want to portray mental health as such. As a result, Dean had to wait a few more months for his main roster debut, which took place in November with Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns as The Shield.
AJ Lee and Jon Moxley are now no longer part of the sports entertainment giant. The former is married to CM Punk while the latter is married to former personality Renee Paquette.
