3 WWE storylines that included real-life family members and 2 that were fake

Not all on-screen WWE families are real
Not all on-screen WWE families are real

Over the years, WWE has tried to create some of the most hard-hitting storylines on TV and most of the time these need to hit a personal level in order to resonate with their audience.

This means that more often than not there will be family members included in storylines so that certain wrestlers can then take out their aggression on the ones closest to their enemy for a better reaction.

In some cases, the personal touch has been the one that's driven these stories forward, whilst others have not been received in the same way.

The following list looks at three times WWE has used real-life family members in storylines and twice that these family members were fake.

#5 Real-life WWE family - The Mysterio Family vs Seth Rollins

Interestingly, 2020 isn't the first year that the entire Mysterio family has been pulled onto WWE TV to be part of a personal storyline. Back in 2005, Eddie Guerrero claimed that Dominik was his son and this then led to a feud between the two men over custody of the eight-year-old which later brought his mother Angie and sister Aalyah into the picture as well.

15 years later, Dominik decided to follow in his father's footsteps and has since been made part of the storyline between the Mysterio family and Seth Rollins. Aalyah and Angie have also become part of the story and have made several on-screen appearances with Aalyah stepping into her own storyline with Murphy.

The Mysterio family finally came out on top in the feud with Rollins that ended last month, but it appears that this could be revisited when The Messiah returns in 2021. At present, the family has stepped into a feud with fellow SmackDown star King Corbin.

#4 Fake - Paul and Katie Lea Burchill

Every now and then Vince McMahon will come up with an idea that he believes is fantastic, but it won't go over well with the WWE Universe. Paul Burchill was the man who was handed a pirate gimmick after the WWE Chairman saw the success of Pirates of The Caribbean.

After his pirate phase came to an end, Burchill stepped into another interesting WWE storyline. This time he was partnered with Katie Lea Burchill, and since both stars were British, it was decided that they would be shown as siblings.

The Burchills went on to be part of some interesting matches on both RAW and ECW throughout 2009. Their last was with Gregory Helms and they were released from the company in 2010.

It was noted by The Wrestling Observer that at one point there was a plan that was decided by McMahon that would see the two "siblings" become more than just family members. Luckily, this idea was later dropped and the two stars were only ever seen as family members.

#3 Real-Life - Edge invades John Cena's home

John Cena and Edge were part of several personal storylines throughout their WWE careers, and more than once, Cena's own father was dragged into a storyline involving his son. John Cena Sr was at home when Edge decided to invade Cena's house ahead of SummerSlam back in 2006 and it didn't end well for the father of the former WWE Champion.

Edge wanted to send a personal message to John Cena and started looking around his home and laughing at most of his collectibles. This was until he came across Cena's father who told Edge that he would call the police if he didn't get out of his house.

The Rated-R Superstar responded by slapping Cena's father across the face before walking over the sofa and exiting the house. The SummerSlam match wasn't as straight forward as Cena expected as the former Champion was looking for revenge for his father, but Lita invaded the match and slapped the referee.

This allowed Cena to win the match via disqualification but Edge still retained the WWE Championship.

#2 Fake - The Undertaker and Kane

One of the most convincing fake WWE families of all time revolved around The Undertaker and his half-brother Kane. The Undertaker was unstoppable throughout the 1990s and Paul Bearer decided that it was a time that he found someone who could step up to The Deadman both physically and emotionally.

In 1997, Kane made his WWE debut after Bearer told an impressive story about how The Undertaker's younger brother had been in the funeral home when The Deadman burned it to the ground and seemingly killed his whole family. What Undertaker didn't know was that Kane had survived and that he was suffering from some pretty brutal scars.

After the issues between The Undertaker and Paul Bearer reached boiling point. his former manager then called in Kane who became his enemy for a short time, before they later joined forces as The Brothers of Destruction.

To this day, there are still WWE fans who believe that Undertaker and Kane were real brothers because Bearer's story was so compelling and there weren't any online forums to debate how real the story was.

#1 WWE Real-life family - Bray Wyatt brings Roman Reigns daughter into the story

Roman Reigns has recently become part of quite a personal storyline that involves his cousin Jey Uso. The Universal Champion recently turned his attention to Kevin Owens and even spoke to his family on the latest episode of SmackDown to tell them to have a conversation with Owens or he will take food off their table.

Roman Reigns himself knows all about personal storylines since the former WWE Champion was embroiled in a feud with Bray Wyatt back in 2014 before Wyatt unleashed The Fiend.

As part of the story, Wyatt brought Roman Reigns' daughter into the conversation and the video where she was seen playing games with her father was played on RAW. Joelle was then mentioned as part of a promo on WWE TV between the two men as a way for it to reach a new level of personal, but it wasn't a story that lasted long.

It was later reported that Reigns was unhappy that the company had used his real-life child in a feud on international TV and so the story was then scrapped.
