3 WWE suspensions that were real and 3 that were part of a storyline

Many WWE suspensions have been a result of a storyline.
Many WWE suspensions have been a result of a storyline.

To prove that there is some kind of hierarchy in the company, WWE has to enforce some rules for their Superstars. This has been the norm for years and will continue to remain one for the foreseeable future.

This means that when wrestlers step out of the line while being on WWE's watch, they are suspended and fined so they could learn that there are some things that they are not allowed to do. While the suspensions that we mostly know of have been storyline-related to give the star some time off, there have been times when these suspensions were warranted due to real-life incidents.

Violation of WWE's Wellness Policy is usually the main reason for real-life suspensions, but there have been a number of real suspensions that were enforced for the strangest of reasons.

#6 Storyline: Brock Lesnar

When Brock Lesnar lost his WWE World Heavyweight Championship without even being pinned at WrestleMania 31 back in 2015, The Beast Incarnate didn't react well the following night on Monday Night RAW.

Lesnar was looking for some revenge on Seth Rollins for cashing in his Money in the Bank contract when he was about to retain in the main event against Roman Reigns. When the former Champion was unable to take out his frustration on Rollins, he went on a one-man riot that saw him F5 Michael Cole out of his own shoes whilst also attacking Joey Mercury and Jamie Noble as well as many members of the camera crew.

These actions left Stephanie McMahon with no other choice but to suspend the former WWE Champion indefinitely for defying all of the authority figures on the show. The Beast only wanted a rematch, something that he was later handed at Battleground 2015, but it was interrupted by The Undertaker.

#5 Real: Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho was suspended for 30 days back in 2012 after WWE was forced to act since the former World Champion was seen denigrating the Brazilian flag at a WWE live event in São Paulo.

The company was forced to issue an apology to its Brazilian fans as Jericho acted in a way that he believed would generate heat but it instead almost got the star arrested.

Jericho took on CM Punk that night in São Paulo and went on to kick the Brazilian flag, which in turn forced the police to intervene and threaten Jericho with an arrest. The former Champion apologized to the audience in attendance which allowed the show to continue but the company was forced to suspend Jericho for his actions and then apologize to the people of Brazil.

WWE even released their own statement on their official website following Jericho's suspension.

Luckily, Jericho wasn't out of action for very long and was able to return and participate in the Money in the Bank ladder match the following month.

#4 Storyline: Ronda Rousey

Ronda Rousey came to WWE back in 2018 and was immediately pushed as the most dominant force in the Women's Division. Rousey proved this many times until Alexa Bliss cashed in her Money in the Bank contract during the former UFC star's match against Nia Jax at the namesake Pay-Per-View, costing Rousey a chance to become the RAW Women's Champion.

The next night on RAW, Rousey unleashed a beating on Alexa Bliss before turning her attention to Kurt Angle, who was her mentor at the time but the star was so enraged that she ended up attacking the Olympic Gold Medalist as well.

WWE was left with no choice but to suspend Rousey for 30 days following the aforementioned incident, but the former UFC Champion isn't the kind of person who would let WWE's rules stand in her way.

Rousey violated her suspension a week later in order to beat Alexa down but Kurt Angle showed up in time to stop Rousey and add another week to her suspension. Rousey was then able to comply with her 30-day suspension so that she could retain her Women's Championship match at SummerSlam.

#3 Real: Austin Theory

Whilst it should be stressed that this is just a rumor at present, Austin Theory was reportedly suspended from WWE last month.

The former NXT star had been appearing on the main roster alongside Murphy and Seth Rollins in their feud with Rey Mysterio for some time before he was found among the stars who were named in the #SpeakingOut campaign.

Since the day his name was mentioned, Theory has been missing from WWE TV with the most recent reports suggesting that the star has been suspended.

Theory last appeared on WWE TV back in June and hasn't even been spotted backstage over the past month. Rollins and Murphy have continued their storyline on RAW and there has been no mention of the WWE star or his absence.

Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer is reporting that the star has been suspended so at present it is unknown what the future holds for the former(?) disciple of Seth Rollins. There are no reports suggesting how long Theory has been suspended for at present either.

#2 Storyline: Nia Jax

The most recent WWE suspension on the list surrounds former Women's Champion Nia Jax, who was suspended from the company last night on RAW.

Jax put her hands on WWE producer Pat Buck last week whilst brawling with fellow star Shayna Baszler and was then fined. Jax was then told to apologize for her actions this week on RAW, something that the star failed to do.

Instead, Jax tried to goad Buck into a match against her which was something that he completely refused. At the time, the former NXT star would have had no idea that there would be such a big consequence to her actions. However, when she refused to apologize, Buck announced that she was suspended indefinitely without pay.

This was likely done to write Jax off WWE TV for a while so that Baszler and Asuka can collide over the right to face Sasha Banks for the RAW Women's Championship. The lack of a timeline also allows WWE to control the narrative and let Jax return when there are some creative ideas for her character.

#1 Real: Titus O'Neil

Daniel Bryan was forced to announce his retirement from WWE back in 2016, and given his popularity at the time, WWE allowed the former Champion to make a speech on RAW.

Many members of the WWE roster were on the ramp for the speech and headed to the back as the show came to a close before Titus O'Neil was spotted amongst the scuffle.

It was later revealed that O'Neil put his hands on Vince McMahon when he was requesting the WWE Chairman to allow Stephanie to exit the ring area first. O'Neil was suspended for 60 days for his actions.

The former Tag Team Champion acknowledged his suspension in an interview with Justin Sarachik after it was revealed that the original punishment was meant to last for 90 days but was later reduced.

I always believe in all things there's always positives in it. I made a mistake at an inopportune time. Regardless if it was too harsh or overreacting or whatever people have deemed it, it all stems from my mistake. Whether I agree with it or not, I am owning it. I'm doing what I'd normally do in any other situation.
