To hold Championship gold is the aim of every Superstar who enters WWE.

Not just a huge feel-good moment, winning a championship means your name is etched in history, and that no matter how many champions may come after you, your legacy has been immortalized.

In the WWE, there are plenty of titles to go around, with the company recently introducing the Women's Tag Team Championships, which will be awarded at the Elimination Chamber.

But whilst the rush of holding a Championship must be an indescribable feeling, so often has it come and gone without pomp and ceremony.

Some Superstars have even been so unlucky, that they have held titles, and for one reason or another, have had their reigns disqualified from the company's history books.

Here are five shocking title changes in WWE that technically never took place, according to WWE.

#5 Jericho wins the big one, in 2000

From the moment Chris Jericho burst into WWE in the summer of 1999, he was a star.

Interrupting The Rock on his very first night, Jericho would gather a legion of fans, who loved his in-ring ability and no-nonsense style on the mic.

It was this gift of gab that convinced Triple H to put his WWF Championship on the line in 2000 on RAW, in what would be a grave error for The Game.

Upsetting the McMahon-Helmsley regime, Jericho would become WWF Champion, thanks in part to a fast count by Earl Hebner, who had suffered at the hands of Triple H.

After consultations with other referees, Jericho would be forced to relinquish his WWF Title, and would have to wait until December 2001 to hold the gold again.

#4 Ring Rope Wrecks Rocker's Reign

The Rockers wowed fans with their skills, but never technically won the Tag Titles.
The Rockers wowed fans with their skills, but never technically won the Tag Titles.

The Rockers were one of the most iconic tag teams of the 1980s, which is why it is so shocking that the team of Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty never held tag team gold.

That's not to say they didn't come close on several occasions, and in one instance, did win the titles, defeating the Hart Foundation for the gold.

there was one issue in the match though, which was that the ring-rope snapped mid-match, and whilst the four talented Superstars were able to carry on, this didn't sit well with the company.

Wanting to have their huge win not be tainted by the rope, the company stripped The Rockers of the gold, promising to re-shoot the title change down the line.

That second match never came and the Harts were awarded the titles back.

#3 The Million Dollar Champion

DiBiase bought the WWF Championship from Andre the Giant and defended it for a week.
DiBiase bought the WWF Championship from Andre the Giant and defended it for a week.

When Andre the Giant defeated Hulk Hogan (thanks in part to some shady refereeing), his reign as WWF Champion did not last long.

Selling the title to Ted DiBiase, this was a huge sign of disrespect to the most coveted prize in the industry, and the title was vacated a week later, before being won by Macho Man Randy Savage at WrestleMania 4.

That much fans know, but what some fans may not be aware of, is that DiBiase did defend the gold for that week on house shows, retaining via cheating.

The list of Superstars DiBiase retained the title against includes Bam Bam Bigelow, with the Beast from the East being handed one of his first WWF losses.

After failing to buy the title, DiBiase would instead create the Million Dollar Championship.

#2 Ric Flair drops the NWA title to save Piper's life

This may not have happened in WWE, but Ric Flair losing the NWA World Championship to Jack Veneno is such a crazy story, it has to be included.

Defending the title against Veneno in the Dominican Republic, Flair was not a popular man, but was perhaps more popular than his manager at the time, 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper.

The original plan for the match, was to have Piper interfere and cost Veneno the match, although when he tried to, security at the event pulled loaded guns on the Hot Rod.

Fearing the worst, Flair quickly changed the finish of the match, with Veneno winning the NWA gold, though the promotion quickly eradicated the title change by having Veneno claim he didn't want to defend the title outside of the Dominican Republic, and was thus stripped of the gold.

#1 Owen steps out from his brother's shadow

Owen captured the WWF Championship from his brother.
Owen captured the WWF Championship from his brother.

As the youngest of the Hart family children, Owen Hart had to scratch and claw for everything he could get.

Even in the WWE, Owen was often in the shadow of big brother Bret, and it eventually caused The Rocket to snap.

Feuding with Bret, who was the WWF Champion at the time, Owen was able to upset his big brother, capturing the title in a Lumberjack match.

A huge win, many fans felt that the younger Hart deserved the win, though WWE officials had other ideas.

Revealing that Owen had cheated, the match was restarted, and it was not long until Bret won, nullifying Owen's brief reign on top.

Whilst he may have been able to celebrate with other Superstars, Owen's omission from the list of WWE Champions does not sit well with many fans.
