Many iconic tag teams have competed throughout the illustrious history of the WWE. In what is becoming more and more of a lost art in the promotion, tag team wrestling has been entertaining the masses since the early days of the sport.

To give WWE credit, there are plenty of historic tag teams that have been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. Teams such as The Hart Foundation, The Road Warriors, The Dudley Boyz, Harlem Heat and The Rock n' Roll Express have all been given their rightful place in the annals of history.

However, as time goes on, there are some glaring omissions of tag teams that are absolutely overdue to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Let's take a closer look at five tag teams that need to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

#5 The Hardy Boyz

There's no doubt about it: The Hardy Boyz are one of the greatest tag teams in WWE history, let alone in professional wrestling.

Being brothers, Matt and Jeff have a chemistry unlike many other tag teams. Their high-flying, daredevil style encapsulated everything that the Attitude Era of WWE in the late 1990s was all about. They took risks and put everything on the line to entertain the crowd and possibly win tag team titles in the process.

The Hardy Boyz picked up where tag teams such as the Rock 'n Roll Express left off. They were cool, hip and treated like rock stars. When the trademark Hardy Boyz music played, arenas would come to their feet and give Team Xtreme an ovation that professional wrestlers of today could only dream of. With their unique look, moveset and presentation, The Hardy Boyz were truly pioneers of where tag team wrestling, and professional wrestling overall, was heading towards in the 21st century.

The Hardy Boyz's last WWE tag team match?

After returning to the WWE in 2017 for one final run as a tag team, The Hardy Boyz were once again separated as Matt Hardy left WWE and signed with AEW in 2020. While Jeff recently re-signed a new deal with WWE, Matt has openly suggested that his current contract with AEW may be his final run as an active in-ring performer. Furthermore, Jeff Hardy has also hinted that his current deal with WWE may also be the final chapter of his in-ring career too.

So, it could be unlikely that we'll ever see The Hardy Boyz team up again on a major stage. Therefore, with the team's final tag team match behind them, it is all but right that The Hardy Boyz are inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame sooner rather than later.

However, with Matt Hardy's current affiliation with All Elite Wrestling, the logistics of such a WWE Hall of Fame induction may prove difficult to pull off.

#4 The Midnight Express

The Midnight Express are considered to be one of the greatest tag teams in professional wrestling history

WWE took the rare step in 2017 of inducting a tag team into the WWE Hall of Fame that largely had success outside of the WWE Universe in the NWA. That tag team was Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson, The Rock N' Roll Express. Inducting the team was their arch nemesis Jim Cornette, the manager of the tag team that had plagued The Rock N' Roll Express for decades and competed in a plethora of five-star classic tag team matches against them, The Midnight Express.

The Midnight Express, managed by Cornette, has seen a few iterations over the years. The first was the combination of Dennis Condry and Bobby Eaton. However, Condry was later removed and replaced by Stan Lane. The matches between The Midnight Express and The Rock N' Roll Express during the heydays of the National Wrestling Alliance and Jim Crockett Promotions are still talked about to this day.

True pioneers of tag team wrestling and without a shadow of a doubt one of the greatest tag teams of all time, The Midnight Express and Jim Cornette are far overdue to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Too controversial for the WWE Hall of Fame?

Some could argue that the reason The Midnight Express and Jim Cornette have yet to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame could be due to WWE's concern about putting a live microphone in the hands of Jim Cornette. However, the Louisville Loudmouth managed to bite his tongue and be civil when inducting the Rock N' Roll Express into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017, so why would it be any different now?

Another explanation as to why The Midnight Express hasn't been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame is because WWE doesn't think its fanbase cares or is aware of tag team wrestling from the NWA and Jim Crockett Promotions during the 1980s. However, once again this myth was dispelled through the induction of The Rock N' Roll Express in 2017.

There's no doubt that The Midnight Express is overdue an induction into the WWE Hall of Fame. Furthermore, another Jim Cornette induction speech would be worth the price of admission alone.

#3 Edge & Christian

2020 and 2021 have truly been remarkable years for Edge and Christian in WWE. After being forced to retire due to a career-ending neck injury in 2011, Edge made a miraculous return to the ring during the 2020 Men's Royal Rumble match.

Fast forward 12 months later and after retiring in 2014 due to a career-ending concussion, Edge's best friend and former tag team partner Christian also defied his medical history by also returning to the ring during the 2021 Men's Royal Rumble match.

However, these aren't the only parallels between Edge and Christian's WWE careers. Edge and Christian were one of the most dominant tag teams during the Attitude Era in the late 1990s. The team are former seven-time WWE World Tag Team Champions. Along with The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boyz, Edge and Christian were pioneers of the death-defying Ladder Matches and Tables, Ladders and Chairs Matches that stole any WrestleMania or SummerSlam cards they competed on.

Deserving of a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame

Edge is already a WWE Hall of Famer. The Rated-R Superstar was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012 after his medically forced retirement in 2011. However, despite Christian's own medically-forced retirement, Captain Charisma has yet to get the nod to be inshrined in the halls of WWE history.

Given that their former rivals The Dudley Boyz were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2018, one would like to think that Edge and Christian would be inducted as a tag team in the near future.

However, given that it would now appear that Edge and Christian are once again both active WWE Superstars, a possible tag team WWE Hall of Fame induction for the duo that totally reeks of awesomeness may be delayed once more.

#2 The Steiner Brothers

There's no doubt that The Steiner Brothers deserve a place in the WWE Hall of Fame. At one point in their career, The Steiner Brothers were one of the most popular and praised tag teams in all of professional wrestling.

Their amateur wrestling and sports background mixed with their hard-hitting offense in the ring made their matches brutally brilliant to watch. As a tag team, Scott and Rick Steiner won a combined 15 World Tag Team Championships during their respective runs in WWE, World Championship Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance.

The duo had feuds with the likes of Money INC. and The Quebecers in WWE but are best known for their matches against The Midnight Express, The Fabulous Freebirds and Doom during their WCW career.

Scott Steiner in the WWE Hall of Fame?

Unfortunately, The Steiner Brothers' historic career as a tag team is often overlooked and overshadowed by the singles career that Scott Steiner forged for himself in the late 90s after the team had parted ways in WCW.

Furthermore, in recent years Big Poppa Pump has been less than complimentary about WWE and a few of its Superstars and Legends. Putting a live microphone in front of Scott Steiner was risky at the best of times, let alone during a WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Nevertheless, should the day come when The Steiner Brothers do get inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, fans will be waiting for Scott's speech with baited breath. Perhaps Big Poppa Pump would even give the fans in attendance and watching at home the honor of listening to some good old fashioned Steiner Math.

Nevertheless, due to the baggage that comes with it, it doesn't look like The Steiner Brothers will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame any time soon. Which is a shame, because as a team in the early to mid 1990s, they were truly one of the best.

#1 Demolition

When discussing tag teams that should be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, one of the first names always mentioned is Demoltion.

Seen by some as WWE's attempt to create their own version of the NWA's Road Warriors, Demolition became something so much more than "LOD lite" during their WWE career.

Demolition's trademark look of facepaint, black leather attire and a catchy entrance theme made them a cult hit despite being portrayed as vicious heels during the late 1980s and early 1990s in WWE.

Ax and Smash held the WWE World Tag Team Championships on three separate occasions during their run with WWE. In fact, one run was historic for being the longest WWE World Tag Team Championship reign of all time, a record that lasted for over 25 years until The New Day broke it in 2016.

Will Demolition ever be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame?

Despite only being a tag team for five years in WWE, Demolition is still being talked about today as an influential tag team that may promotions, wrestlers and new teams look to replicate.

In a time when WWE was catering more to the children in their audience, Ax and Smash represented something that was "cool" to the older members of the crowd and viewers at home, an aspect that still resonates to professional wrestling fans today.

Given the influence and historic World Tag Team Championship reign that Demolition had during their WWE career, one would assume they would be a formality for the Hall of Fame.

However, as time goes on, the absence of Demolition from any WWE Hall of Fame class becomes more and more obvious. It has been speculated that the reason Demolition has not been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame is because of Ax and Smash's participation in a lawsuit filed against WWE for issues related to concussions sustained during their careers.

Despite these hurdles, many fans of WWE from the late 80s and tag team fanatics hope to see Ax and Smash walk their way into the WWE Hall of Fame one day.
