“No matter how many red carpets you walk in your $4000 ridiculous high heels, you’ll never be able to lace up my Chuck Taylors”
It’s really hard to find one female performer in the WWE who got insanely popular without ever being a valet to a male wrestler. Chyna was Triple H’s personal security. Lita was Essa Rios’s valet, tag team partners with The Hardy Boyz, Kane’s wife and Edge’s girlfriend. Trish came in as a valet for T’n’A, then moved on to singular competition and took baby steps towards a fledging wrestling career and in between, she teamed with the Dudley Boys and then Christian after betraying Chris Jericho.
AJ’s career is not devoid of men either. Actually it’s sprinkled and splattered with them. But although her on screen persona is that of a crazy chick with plenty of episodes personifying the meaning of the ‘Love Bites’ phrase on her T-Shirt, her life off-screen is pretty much quiet and far from scandalous.
Look who just shut down all of Tony Khan's critics! More HERE.
Maybe that’s why her promo last night touched quite a few chords. The Bellas, obviously, came across as being more vocal against AJ’s tirade and they were definitely the most negative aspect of the entire mis-en-scene of that amazing promo. Apart from one line (“You just skip!!”) from Brie Bella, the entire act of raising their voices by the Bella’s looked more and more redundant as AJ Lee moved on with her promo. I mean, lines like “Say it to our face” when AJ was actually saying it to their face, made them look like the useless, plastic, bimbo mannequins that AJ was talking about.
Even though it’s an established fact that there is nothing real about a reality show and it is just, at the end of the day, creative reality, Total Divas stands out, maybe mostly, for being a show as a fame tool for the Bellas’ and John Cena’s appearances is definitely a process for accumulating ratings.
At the end of the day, how do these divas actually contribute to the product? Natalya’s talents, I accept, have not been utilized to its full potential. Heck! Not even to half of its potential. But looking at the other divas, it’s hard to point out one thing that makes WWE Divas different than women outside WWE who earn their living by being just pretty damsels.
What always made the WWE divas different was maybe their physique and their athleticism. The cast of Total Divas, except Natalya, fail on one or both parameters. And their rising screen time is just testament to the falling Divas Division. But since AJ’s arrival and her storylines with all the countless men, she has constantly been able to have a significant presence in most of screen time.
She constantly gets a reaction and in Stephanie McMahon’s own words, she is a true “underdog story”. She’s got the best chance of making that butterfly belt stand for something important. Something worth winning. And I really liked her line on her Chuck Taylor’s as I have seen her making most of her public appearances in Chuck Taylors.
And even though the Bellas might rant about AJ being in the spotlight because of all the men WWE made her get involved with on TV, their own sufficiently reported backstage power because of their relationships and the constant sidekick drama that nobody cares about between Bellas and Maria Kannellis – AJ’s promo last night stood above it all.
Has any diva given such a good promo, ever? That promo was only and only done by AJ, alone. No men were by her side then. The Total Divas can never make a promo like that sound legitimate.
