Backlash 2020 Preview: 3 popular stars to possibly lose titles, Surprising finish to Edge-Randy Orton match? (June 14th, 2020)

Welcome to WWE Backlash 2020 preview. As you know, the tagline for the main event is "The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever". While the tagline was highly criticized by almost everyone (including Edge and Randy Orton themselves), we could still be witness to an interesting main event at Backlash.

The card looks stronger than the Money in the Bank 2020 PPV, but one can't deny that there's a big lack of star power on the card. Either way, a PPV with low expectations normally tends to deliver and we fully expect that to happen with Backlash.

#7. Apollo Crews (c) vs Andrade - United States Championship

The big rematch at Backlash
The big rematch at Backlash

This has been one of the better stories on RAW. Apollo Crews has always been considered a superstar who "has all the tools", yet has never been able to rise above his position in WWE. With 5 years under the belt and no Championships to show for, a move to Monday Night RAW would result in him having the best run of his career yet.

He was in a spot where he had qualified for the Money in the Bank 2020 ladder match and come close to a United States title win, but an injury in a title match with Andrade saw him lose by referee stoppage and also lead to him being removed from Money in the Bank 2020.

He would return and found an ally in Kevin Owens. Apollo Crews then went on to beat Andrade the following week to win his first Championship in WWE. The former Champion Andrade won a #1 contender's match, beating Kevin Owens and Angel Garza to secure a title shot at Backlash 2020.

Apollo could losse the title back to Andrade after just a few weeks of holding the title.

#6. Sasha Banks & Bayley (c) vs The IIconics vs Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross - WWE Women's Tag Team Championship

Bayley is having the year of her career. Had it not been for a small snag, i.e, Charlotte Flair winning the SmackDown Women's Championship for around a week last year, Bayley would have held the title for over a year by now.

Regardless, she's dominated the title, and given that she managed to retain the title at WrestleMania 36 and Money in the Bank, so it doesn't seem too surprising that she tagged along with Sasha Banks to beat Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross and become 2-time Women's Tag Team Champions.

Not wanting to take the same moniker as Becky Lynch last year, Bayley has now dubbed herself "Bayley dos straps". Tonight at Backlash 2020, she defends the Tag Team titles against Bliss & Cross and RAW superstars The IIconics.

The IIconics beat The Boss N' Hug Connection last year at WrestleMania 36, but they never entered the title picture again after losing it. That was, of course, until recently. Given the odds and the rules of a triple threat tag team match, we expect The IIconics to possibly win the titles again at Backlash, ending Banks and Bayley's reign at just over two weeks.

#5. Edge vs Randy Orton - The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever

Will the match deliver at Back
Will the match deliver at Backlash?

Edge vs Randy Orton was one of the marquee matches of WrestleMania 36. As you know by now, Edge had his dream return to the ring at Royal Rumble 2020, where he lasted up until the final three before being eliminated by Roman Reigns.

The next night, his old tag team partner Randy Orton welcomed him back, but a nostalgic reunion turned into a vicious beating on The Rated-R Superstar. It would lead to a lengthy Falls Count Anywhere encounter at WrestleMania 36, where Edge was triumphant in his first singles match in 9 years.

Now, he's all set to have his first gimmick-less wrestling in 9 years as he takes on Randy Orton in the main event at Backlash. We understand why there's a lot of criticism about the tag line of this match, but we still expect them to deliver.

It'll be a bit surprising if Randy Orton wins, but it's highly possible that we see him beat Edge at Backlash to get to a trilogy - potentially around SummerSlam time.

#4. Asuka (c) vs Nia Jax - RAW Women's Championship

Asuka and Nia Jax are no strangers to each other. They came up around the same time in NXT, but it was Asuka, the more experienced competitor, who ended up finding more success. This resulted in the longest NXT Women's Championship reign in the brand's history and the longest title reign in the brand's history as well.

In that historic undefeated run of Asuka, she ran through Nia Jax on more than one occasion. Asuka won the Women's Money in the Bank briefcase, becoming the fourth woman in WWE history to do so.

As it turns out, the briefcase was to determine the next RAW Women's Champion. Becky Lynch announced that Asuka was the new Champion, vacating the title after over a year to take pregnancy leave.

With Becky Lynch now behind, the Women's division has to move on. Nia Jax made the first move, crashing Asuka and Kairi Sane's title celebration party. We expect Asuka to get the better of Jax again at Backlash, proving that she has her number.

#3. Braun Strowman (c) vs The Miz & John Morrison - Universal Championship

A tough test or an easy title defense?
A tough test or an easy title defense?

Unfortunately, we find this match to be the most underwhelming one on the Backlash card. There isn't much of a reason to have this match, but it's going to be another handicap title defense for Strowman.

The last time Braun Strowman was in a handicap title match, he lost the Intercontinental Championship to Sami Zayn (also involving Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura). We expect this to be different and for Strowman to run through the former Tag Team Champions.

#2. Jeff Hardy vs Sheamus

Jeff Hardy vs Sheamus is the biggest grudge match on the Backlash card

This is going to be an interesting one. They faced off in the first round of the Intercontinental title match, with Hardy beating Sheamus. This resulted in Sheamus setting a trap that implicated Jeff Hardy in being guilty of another DUI.

Hardy insisted that it was all a set-up and his "drug test" a couple of nights back ended with him throwing urine on Sheamus' face. Who will walk out victorious at Backlash?

#1. Drew McIntyre (c) vs Bobby Lashley - WWE Championship

Drew McIntyre vs Bobby Lashley could be the match of the night at Backlash
Drew McIntyre vs Bobby Lashley could be the match of the night at Backlash

While Edge vs Randy Orton is supposed to be "The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever", we feel that the WWE Championship bout between Drew McIntyre and Bobby Lashley is possibly the most underrated match on the Backlash card.

It's hard for many to wrap their heads around the fact that Bobby Lashley is getting a title shot - especially since he had no momentum pre-WrestleMania 36. However, MVP has lit a fire under him and we're finally beginning to see the "real" Bobby Lashley - one of the most dominant superstars in WWE.

It's been at the expense of his relationship with Lana, which has been affected since MVP's involvement. However, it's hard to argue with the results. In less than 24 hours, Bobby Lashley could reach the pinnacle of his career.

It's hard to bet against Drew McIntyre, especially given the momentum he has going for him now. However, it's an interesting stylistic clash, one that'll be a battle between two strong superstars. Expect an explosive match-up at Backlash.
