Elimination Chamber 2014: Is this Alberto Del Rio's last main event?

The hot import

The hot import

Alberto Del Rio might be one of the hottest commodities that have set foot in the squared circle of WWE after crossing the border. Technically and vocally gifted, Del Rio boasts the ability to break out into the main event scene of any promotion that currently runs anywhere around the world.

But WWE isn’t like any other promotion; they have been the monopolistic power in the professional wrestling business ever since the downfall of WCW. And such a big company wouldn’t have any trouble building up a main event that doesn’t need Alberto Del Rio.

Sadly speaking that’s the situation we are heading into as Del Rio is slowly being pushed out of the big scene.

If you have a vague look at the career graph of Del Rio over the past year, there would be more highs than lows. The guy went on to main event WrestleMania, he held the World Heavyweight title for so long, he was in the title scene for so long even after losing the title and recently he has himself booked with the Royal Rumble winner.

The short term plan

The short term plan

Many wrestlers in the current roster won’t have such a track record over the past week making Del Rio stand out. However, if we take a closer look it will be evident that Del Rio has been on a downward spiral ever since he lost his title and Ricardo Rodriguez.

Losing the side of an entertaining manager like Rodriguez hurt Del Rio dearly as the two had some great chemistry working out between them causing occasional giggles here and there. This lack of entertainment quotient made Del Rio look stale since he was nothing more than an old typical villain.

Then the title drop of Del Rio was actually the first nail on the coffin as this lost lead to a title unification leaving him nothing more to fight for.

Del Rio was pushed out of the main event scene with the title loss momentarily. One can’t argue with the creative as well on this one since Del Rio stuck around too long near the title.

A string of falls to random mid carders and some wins here and there followed for the Mexican as he became the latest victim of the creative team who don’t mind playing stone paper scissor to book wrestlers randomly.

When Batista’s return was confirmed all these changed and the writers came with an evil plan of giving Del Rio a shot at the animal. This was a good plan to be frank since it had Del Rio back in the main event scene.

But what will happen next?

How long can the smile stay?

How long can the smile stay?

Del Rio is surely not going to win against Batista as the company wouldn’t want to make the animal look bad before his big WrestleMania main event. Del Rio is sure to loss and get knocked out during the process.

Once he ends his feud with Batista, Del Rio will be back into that limbo state of random booking giving the fans no room for any emotions seeing him.

A stale character, the absence of Rodriguez, lack of credible title will also come back and bite Del Rio who will be cursing the time he took the decision to join WWE.

However, apart from all these reasons the main thing that is going to keep Del Rio out of the main event scene after Elimination chamber is the sheer star power that the company has now.

With Undertaker returning soon the company will have big names like Taker, Brock Lesnar, John Cena, Batista, Randy Orton, Sheamus, Daniel Bryan, Triple H and some more .None in the list would have Del Rio as their choice opponent as he is not big enough to make a WrestleMania moment.

Young guns like Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt and Cesaro will also be engaged in something bigger because of the push they are getting.

Waiting for the miracle

Waiting for the miraclew

This leaves Del Rio with the lights of Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, Brodus Clay and the other B graders in the company who would only dream of the main event at the current situation. We all could imagine what a mess would it be when another Ziggler – Del Rio feud breaks out. All the other cases also make worst scenarios that won’t be worth spending time on.

If he doesn’t want to die off like many other big names in the past, the best thing Del Rio could do is get a break from WWE and spend some time in Mexico or even TNA and come back strongly to make his presence felt.

As long as that doesn’t happen, Del Rio is going to get buried in the talent and star power of others making a complete waste of the skills that he is known for. But there can always be miracles in the pro wrestling world giving all those Del Rio fans out there a glimmer of hope in seeing their hero triumph again.
