WWE year in review: 5 best saves of 2015

Randy Orton + Sting in same ring = epicThe never ending battle between good guys and bad guys has always been the basic theme of professional wrestling. Yes, it is a complex art form with a plethora of other layers, but therein lies the core. There are exceptions, but if we talk of a majority, then there is a clear line between the bad guys and good guys. The idea is to get the fans behind the good guy. Sometimes WWE gets it right and sometimes they don’t.One instance that always works is a run in rescue. Whenever a face superstar comes to save his fellow superstar, there is a sense of heroism on display which urges us to cheer. 2015 had a handful of such moments and here is a look at them.

#5 Paige gets some help

AJ Lee and Paige will mostly be remembered as rival. However, these two had a memorable stint as friends. The angle culminated in a tag team match between Paige and AJ Lee against the Bella twins at WrestleMania 31.

It all started when AJ Lee came to the rescue of Paige on the 2 March 2015 edition of Monday Night Raw. AJ was sidelined due to injury for the start of 2015 and her return to television was a big deal.

And especially since AJ came out to rescue Paige from the Bella Twins, it received a positive reception from the WWE fans. AJ retired after her match alongside Paige and it is safe to say that these two kick started the Divas Revolution.

#4 Sting and Orton shares the ring

The buildup for the WrestleMania bout between Sting and Triple H was a long one. Sting saved Cena once during this spell (as we saw in the last slide) and he pulled off another rescue operation when he saved Randy Orton.

The March 16 episode of Raw saw Orton struggle against the Authority but he was saved in perfect time by the Icon. The image of Orton and Sting sharing the same ring was something worth cherishing for the ages.

Shortly after, Sting spoke for the first time in a WWE ring and apparently, the save was WWE’s idea of warming the crowd.

#3 Sting helps John Cena

The long wait to see Sting in WWE finally came to an end in 2014. He showed up at Survivor Series and helped Team Cena to get a win over Team Authority. However, Sting did not show up afterwards and this caused a lot of curiosity among the WWE fans.

A couple of months later, Sting made his second major WWE appearance. It happened at the January 19 edition of Monday Night Raw where John Cena was booked in the main event against Big Show, Kane and Seth Rollins.

Cena was outnumbered and out came Sting to the rescue. It was a mere distraction rather than a rescue, but it allowed Cena to win the match.

#2 The Rock is here

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is one of those superstars who have the ability to evoke a pop whenever he comes by. WWE made good use of this fact at this year’s Royal Rumble. The Philadelphia fans, known for their notoriety, were all set to hijack the show as Reigns was the favorite to win the Rumble match.

WWE brought in Rock to solve the situation. He came to the aid of his cousin when the Big Show and Kane double teamed on Reigns. With this timely help, Reigns won the Rumble, but WWE’s purpose of attracting cheers failed big time.

The save did no good for Reigns but for the fans, it was good to see Rock at the Rumble.

#1 Samoa Joe makes his NXT debut

NXT thrives on simple booking. Their storylines are straight to the point and unlike the main roster product, they don’t simply over book segments. One great example for this came at NXT Takeover: Unstoppable.

It was headlined by Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens headlined the event and it ended in a no contest when Owens continuously assaulted the injured Zayn.

This ended the feud that Owens and Zayn had had and Owens, as the NXT champion, needed something new. And this set the stage perfectly for Samoa Joe. He ran down to stop Owens from destroying Zayn and just when one feud ended, another one started. Simple, isn’t it?
