Titled "I Don't Know What Lies Around The Bend, But I Hope The Best Does," the episode opened with Anne back at Green Gables after completing her studies at Queen's. One fine morning, Matthew collapsed during breakfast. As it stands, he had passed away, likely due to a heart attack. Anne wept inconsolably that night.

The period after Matthew's passing was a difficult one for both Marilla and Anne. However, they slowly came to terms with it and began to accept it gradually. For the time being, Marilla needed to have her eyes checked by a renowned oculist visiting Green Gables while Diana would keep Anne company.

Problems kept piling on, as Marilla was diagnosed to now be losing her eyesight if she didn't take certain precautions. Due to this, she wanted to sell Green Gables, a decision Anne strongly opposed. She too had taken a decision—she would forfeit the Redmond College scholarship and stay at Green Gables to teach in Carmody.

News of this development spread, and many were understandably shocked. However, good news was around the bend, as Gilbert Blythe (previously slated to teach at Avonlea) had withdrawn his application. He would take White Sands and recommend Anne Shirley for the post of educator at Avonlea.

Upon hearing this, the redhead rushed to the Blythe household to thank him, but Gilbert had gone away. Soon after, they met by the lake and reconciled, vowing to become the best of friends henceforth. Upon returning, Anne informed Marilla of the developments, and together, the ladies began a new chapter.
