Jujutsu Kaisen has a running issue in developing relationships between characters in a meaningful manner, which often leads to people having doubts regarding some plot points. However, there are some instances where this does work, and a good example of that is Satoru Gojo's actions with Megumi Fushiguro, which kept the latter from suffering an awful fate.
Megumi, based on what Jujutsu Kaisen author Gege Akutami established in the story, had the potential to become the next strongest, but thanks to Gojo's guidance and his death, he managed to save him from that fate. Moreover, it established that he had what his mentor didn't, which was a much healthier structure where he could have a better life.

Explaining how Gojo saved Megumi from the fate of the strongest in Jujutsu Kaisen
It has been established from the early portion of the story that Megumi Fushiguro has a lot of potential as a sorcerer since he has the Zen'in clan's Ten Shadows Cursed Technique. However, thanks to the fact that he was taken under Satoru Gojo's wing, he was able to live a somewhat normal life with his sister Tsumiki, which is something that his mentor didn't have.
When compared to Gojo, who was constantly dealing with the ramifications of his role as the strongest, Megumi could live his life without that burden, which is also shown during the climactic final battle with Ryomen Sukuna. The sacrifices that Satoru made to save his pupil ended up giving the latter the chance he needed to live on and have a much more satisfying life.
It is very fair to claim that, from a meta perspective, Megumi never lived up to the potential of his Ten Shadows, although, from an in-universe perspective, he was saved from having to be a repetition of what happened to Gojo. Therefore, this is something that needs to be considered when analyzing his character throughout the manga.
The ups and downs of Megumi's character

There is no denying that Jujutsu Kaisen author Gege Akutami made one of his most divisive characters in Megumi Fushiguro because of the way he was written and how he never lived up to the expectations of the fandom, hence his "Potential Man" nickname online. Furthermore, Akutami didn't push forward with the idea of him being a fully tragic character, with Megumi basically getting a happy ending in the story's conclusion.
There is a general feeling that Megumi had several plot points that should have been developed a lot better, such as his relationship with his father, Toji Fushiguro, and his connections with the Zen'in clan. When considering how important Tsumiki was to him, it is quite telling that the story doesn't really give them a lot of meaningful interactions, although this is an issue that plagues the entire manga.
Final thoughts
There is a strong argument to be made that Gojo's actions throughout Jujutsu Kaisen saved Megumi from becoming another case like him of a powerful sorcerer pushed to a life he didn't want. This highlights the relationship between the two of them and also the element of Gojo wanting to create a better society.
