Joel Embiid's injury raises concerns for 76ers

The injury bug has continued to hit the Philadelphia 76ers, as superstar Joel Embiid is expected to be sidelined.

Philadelphia is already without their other superstar, guard James Harden. Joel Embiid stepped up with Harden on the sidelines and was playing some of his best basketball yet. In his last six games, Embiid was averaging 37.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.3 blocks per game. The 76ers were 4-2 during that stretch of performances.

After a recent injury to rising star Tyrese Maxey, responsibilities have been put on Embiid to carry the team. Embiid put forth an impressive performance on Saturday in a 112-109 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He finished with 32 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals.

However, Embiid also went down with an injury. According to NBA insider Shams Charania, Embiid is expected to miss a couple of upcoming games. Embiid is dealing with a left midfoot sprain and will be reevaluated in the "coming days."

Joel Embiid's injury history has been problematic throughout his career. It could have been much worse, as Embiid is only set to miss two games.

The bigger problem for the 76ers has become the timing of his injury. Philadelphia has been dealing with numerous injuries to start out the season. Superstar James Harden remains sidelined and rising star Tyrese Maxey is set to miss 3-4 weeks with a foot fracture.

After losing their first three games to start the season, the 76ers (8-8) have battled back to get to .500. With Joel Embiid now sidelined, the 76ers will be without three of their top offensive threats.

Embiid has been one of the most impressive players in the entire league this season. He's averaging 32.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.8 blocks per game while shooting 52.1%.

The 76ers have a favorable upcoming schedule, including matchups against the Brooklyn Nets (8-9) on Tuesday and Charlotte Hornets (4-14) on Wednesday.

After that, they will have a pair of games against the Orlando Magic (5-12) before their schedule gets challenging. They will face the Atlanta Hawks (10-6), Cleveland Cavaliers (10-6) and Memphis Grizzlies (10-7) on a brutal three-game stretch. With the injuries continuing to pile up, the 76ers have to be careful not to fall down the standings.

The hope is that Embiid is only set to miss the upcoming two games. With the realization that he will be re-evaluated, it could end up longer. Embiid's injury history has shown that the organization doesn't want to rush him back.
