Tyrese Maxey: A Brief Biography
Tyrese Kendrid Maxey, born November 4, 2000, is an American basketball player. He is also known as “Mad Maxey”. The Philadelphia 76ers drafted him in the 2020 NBA draft, and he has played for the same team as a point guard in the NBA since then.
Throughout his NBA career, Tyrese participated in various matches against various teams, including the Washington Wizards, Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors, and Miami Heat. He was selected in the 2018 USA Today All-Texas First Team and McDonald’s All-American Game.
Tyrese Maxey’s Early Life
Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Tyrese Maxey was born on November 4, 2000, to his parents, Denyse and Tyrone Maxey. His father, Tyrone Maxey, is the director of Recruiting for SMU’s basketball team and played basketball for the Washington State Cougars men’s basketball team.
During childhood, Tyrese had a great interest in movies and has seen every Marvel movie since 2008. In sports, he was greatly inspired by an American basketball player, Dwayne Wade, and he always wanted to play like him. His father, Tyrone, created a video analysis of different basketball players, including Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving and trained his son with it.

Tyrese Maxey attended the South Garland High School in Garland, Texas. He primarily played as a shooting guard in high school. Tyrese averaged 22.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in his sophomore year. He got a chance to play in the Texas State basketball tournament and scored 46 points in the semifinals. As a senior, Tyrese averaged 21.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game during high school basketball.
After completing high school, Tyrese enrolled at the University of Kentucky in 2019. He played his first match for his college at Madison Square Garden against the Michigan State Spartans. On December 28, Tyrese grabbed 27 points and seven rebounds in a 78-70 victory over the Louisville Cardinals. During college, he was regarded as the NCAA Division I National Player of the Week, the United States Basketball Writers Association Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Week and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Week.
In February 2020, Tyrese recorded a 73-66 win over the Auburn Tigers. The Wildcats were expected to play in the 2020 SEC men’s basketball tournament during the regular season, but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He played 31 games for his college basketball team and averaged 14 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.
Tyrese was selected to the All-SEC Second Team and the SEC All-Freshman Team at the end of the season. After the COVID-19 pandemic, he finally declared for the 2020 NBA draft on April 6, 2020.

Philadelphia 76ers
Tyrese Maxey was selected as the 21st overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. On December 3, 2020, he officially started his NBA career by signing his first-ever rookie scale contract with the team. Tyrese participated in his first NBA championship against the Washington Wizards on December 23 and tallied six points and two rebounds in a gameplay of 11 minutes.
Joel Embid and Ben Simmons suffered from an injury in January 2021 and could not play on January 9 in a game against the Denver Nuggets. Tyrese Maxey was allowed to play in this game and had an impressive performance in the match. However, the Philadelphia 76ers lost the game to the Denver Nuggets. He is the first player in the Philadelphia 76ers team’s history since 1970 to score the most points. Ben Simmons refused to play in the 2021-22 season with the Philadelphia 76ers. Tresey and Shake Milton adopted the platoon system for the starting point guard position at the start of the 2021-22 season. After playing in the 51 games of the season, Tresey was selected to play in the 2022 NBA Rising Stars Challenge game. James Harden was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers from Brooklyn Nets. Tresey finished his sophomore season averaging 17.5 points per game.
At the start of the 2022 NBA playoffs, the Philadelphia 76ers recorded a career-high 38 points in a 131-111 win over the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors were defeated by the Philadelphia 76ers in the six games and averaged 21.3 points per game. Tresey faced the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Semifinals and finished the series averaging 20.2 points per game.
On October 28, 2022, Tresey grabbed a carrier-high 44 points in a match against the Toronto Raptors. He became the only Sixers player after Hal Greer and Allen Iverson to score at least 40 points before the age of 23.
