Alamo Bowl History

Initially known as the Builders Square Alamo Bowl from 1993 to 1998, the Alamo Bowl underwent several name changes reflecting sponsorships over the years. Its logo evolved alongside these shifts from Sylvania to MasterCard Alamo Bowl. On May 24, 2007, the bowl announced a partnership with Valero Energy Corporation, leading to a name change to reflect the collaboration. This partnership endured until 2025.

Initially, the Alamo Bowl extended automatic invitations to teams from the now-defunct Southwest Conference (SWC). However, in 1993, due to a lack of eligible SWC teams, the Iowa Hawkeyes received an invitation. The SWC contributed teams in the following years before its disbandment.

Noteworthy moments in Alamo Bowl history include the 1996 game, where the Iowa Hawkeyes honored a player's late mother by wearing plain black helmets. The 2002 Alamo Bowl marked the first overtime game, with the Wisconsin Badgers triumphing over the Colorado Buffaloes. 2005 a controversial multi-lateral play occurred, reminiscent of historic football moments like "The Play" in 1982 and the "Music City Miracle" in 2000.

The 2007 Alamo Bowl set an attendance record at the Alamodome, with 66,166 spectators witnessing the clash between the Penn State Nittany Lions and Texas A&M Aggies. The Nittany Lions emerged victorious with a 24–17 score.

The bowl has seen seven sell-out games, demonstrating its popularity. In 2009, a significant agreement was reached with the Pac-10 Conference (now Pac-12) to replace the Big Ten Conference in the Alamo Bowl, starting from the 2010 college football season. This reshuffling also affected the Holiday Bowl and brought the Pac-12's second-choice team to the Alamo Bowl.

The 2011 Alamo Bowl entered the record books as the Baylor Bears and Washington Huskies combined for 123 points, making it the highest-scoring game in college football bowl history. This game also marked the first time the Alamo Bowl hosted the Heisman Trophy winner of that season, Baylor's Robert Griffin III, adding another layer to the bowl's rich history.
