In American football, the University of Southern California is represented by the USC Trojans football program. The Trojans play in both the Pac-12 Conference and the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The current head coach of the team is Lincoln Riley.

Established in 1888, the team boasts more than 860 victories and 11 national titles, including seven from the major wire service (AP, Coaches'). They have also achieved 13 seasons without a loss, including eight perfect seasons, and 37 conference titles have been achieved by USC.

Selected as the most successful university in history, USC has generated the greatest number of NFL draft picks (524), eight Heisman Trophy winners, and 84 first-team consensus all-Americans (including 27 unanimous selections). Additionally, 35 former USC players and coaches, including John McKay and Howard Jones, as well as former players Matt Leinart, O. J. Simpson, and Ronnie Lott, have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

The Trojans are the team with the most entrants into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with 14, including Marcus Allen, Ron Yary, Bruce Matthews, Junior Seau, and Marcus Allen. USC is tied with the University of Miami for the most wide receivers (40) to play in the NFL and owns the record for the most quarterbacks (17) among all colleges and universities.

How many National Championships has the USC won?

USC has won 11 national championships (1928, 1931, 1932, 1939, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1974, 1978, 2003, 2004). Howard Jones led USC to a 9-0-1 record in 1928. USC went on to win the Rose Bowl in 1931 and 1932, with respective records of 10-1 and 10-0. Under Dickinson, USC went 8-2, won the Rose Bowl, and finished third in 1939. John McKay guided USC to an 11-0 record, a Rose Bowl victory, and a No. 1 ranking in 1962.

USC finished first both times and won the Rose Bowl in 1967 and 1972 with records of 10-1 and 12-1, respectively. USC, ranked No. 1 in the coaches' poll and No. 2 in the AP, won the Rose Bowl in 1974 with a 10-1 record. John Robinson led USC to a 12-1 record in 1978, the Rose Bowl, and rankings of No. 1 in the coaches' poll and No. 2 in the AP.

Pete Carroll guided USC to a 12-1 record in 2003, the Rose Bowl, and the top spot in the AP and coaches' polls. After placing first in multiple selector rankings and winning the Orange Bowl in 2004 with a 13-0 record, USC's BCS championship was later revoked.

The 2004 national champion selection and the Grantland Rice Trophy were revoked from USC by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). The AFCA Coaches' Poll Trophy was given back, and the BCS also nullified USC's 2004 BCS National Championship and its participation in the 2005 Orange Bowl. The official record for the 2004 USC Trojans was 11-0 after the Orange Bowl victory over Oklahoma and the regular season victory against UCLA were both nullified.

When was the last time USC won the National Championships?

The last time USC saw victory in a national championship was in 2004. The Trojans, led by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Matt Leinart, went 13-0 and utterly destroyed Oklahoma, 55-19, in the BCS National Championship Game. However, the NCAA would subsequently withdraw the title because of the Reggie Bush controversy.

The year before, USC also won the national championship with Leinart, though it did so in a contentious manner as it shared the title with LSU. In what was arguably one of the best college football games ever played, the Trojans lost to Texas in the 2005 title game when they returned to the top.

USC National Championships wins years

Major selectors appointed by the NCAA have awarded 17 national titles to USC, including 6 unclaimed championships. USC boasts 11 national championships, including 7 from the Coaches' Poll and/or the main wire-service AP Poll. The Dickinson System, which was developed by a professor at the University of Illinois and used to choose national champions from 1926 to 1940, provides the foundation for two of USC's championships, 1928 and 1939.

The Official 2010 NCAA FBS Record Book lists the Dickinson System as a valid national title selection. USC's assertion is in line with that of other FBS teams that took home the Dickinson Title. The 1939 team was named a national championship team by USC in 2004.

A breakdown of institutional control, namely concerning Reggie Bush, resulted in NCAA fines for the 2004 team, which forced them to forfeit the last two games of their season, including the 2005 Orange Bowl.

The BCS's decision to revoke USC's 2004 championship was postponed while the school filed an appeal against the penalties. In the end, USC was unsuccessful in its appeals and had to give up the 2004 BCS title. The Trojans still own a share of the national championship since the AP did not give up its 2004 title.
