3 overseas players who might be dropped by Chennai Super Kings before IPL 2019

CSK have been impressive this season

The Chennai Super Kings have been mighty impressive with the bat but the two-time champions haven't lived up to the standards by them in previous seasons. To address the issue, CSK has tried quite a few overseas options in the bowling department.

The Super Kings seem to have found the right overseas combination coming to the business end of the tournament but in the early stages of the tournament, they haven't found much success with a few overseas players.

With players like Mitchell Santner set to return next season, a few overseas players might get dropped for the next season.

Here are the three players that might get dropped by Chennai Super Kings:

#3 Mark Wood

E
Mark Wood played just one match for the Super Kings

Matches: 1, Overs: 4, Wickets: 0, Economy rate: 12.25

Mark Wood had a terrible start to his IPL career as he ended his IPL debut match with bowling figures which he will not be proud of.

Wood had a great first over as he conceded only two runs bowling the tenth over of the first match of the tournament.

But after that, he had to face the wrath of the Pandya brothers and ended up conceding in 47 runs in the next three overs.

After having such a horrible start to his IPL career, he did not play another match for the Chennai-based franchise.

With Lungisani Ndigi's rise in the Chennai bowling, Wood did not get any more chances to play this season and he left to train for England's upcoming international fixtures even before the completion of IPL.

With him not being impressive on his IPL debut, Wood might not don the yellow in the next season.

#2 David Willey

New Zealand v England - 2nd ODI
David Willey could not perform well in his debut IPL season

Innings: 3, Overs: 10, Wickets: 2, Average: 47.50, Economy rate: 9.50

Unlike his fellow countrymate Mark Wood who had a horrible debut match, David Willey had a good debut match against Royal Challengers Bangalore as he gave away only 24 runs for a wicket in his quota of four overs.

In his second match, Willey was battered for 47 runs in his four overs, thanks to Buttler and Gowtham, who helped Rajasthan Royals win the match.

In the penultimate over Willey gave away 16 runs and that turned the match in RR's favour.

Willey was given another chance to prove himself against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, but on his third outing, he again went for plenty as he conceded 24 runs in 2 overs.

With Willey not impressing the chances of him being released are high as he was signed as a replacement by Chennai Super Kings.

#1 Faf Du Plessis

this season

Matches: 4, Runs: 85, Average: 21.25, Strike rate: 111.84

The South African batsman could not live up to the standards set by him in previous seasons of the Indian Premier League.

Before playing in this IPL, Faf Du Plessis averaged around 30 but in this season he has an average of 21.25 in the four innings that he played.

Even his strike rate took a beating this season as he could only manage to score runs at a rate of 111.84. In spite of getting starts on two occasions, Du Plessis could not convert those opportunities into big ones.

With Shane Watson batting so well at the top, Chennai might want to look at some other options next season to replace Du Plessis, who might face the axe.
