Barsapara Cricket Stadium

Formerly known as the "Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cricket Stadium", the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati is the home of Assam Cricket Association, which was established in the year 2012. The capacity of the venue is around 50,000.

The venue first hosted an international match; a T20I against Australia in October 2017. The match was won by Australia by nine wickets.

Overall, the venue has played host to 3 T20Is and 2 ODIs since making its debut in 2018.

History

The foundation stone for the stadium was laid by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in the year 2004.

Two years later, the construction work of the stadium started on an area of 59 bighas of land.

It took six years to complete the construction work, and the newly created ground hosted its first game- an Inter-state Senior Women's One-day Championship match between Assam and Odisha in November 2012.

The venue hosted 4 Ranji Trophy fixtures during the 2013-14 season before finally throwing open the doors for international cricket, three years later.

Major Matches

The debut international match at the Barsapara Stadium proved to be a nightmare for the home side as little-known Australian left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff (4/21 in 4) tore through the Indian top-order.

India were eventually dismissed for 118; a target which was chased down with ease by the Australians.

In October 2018, the venue hosted its maiden ODI between India and the West Indies, where majestic knocks from Virat Kohli (140 off 107) and Rohit Sharma (152* off 117) guided the home side to a comfortable 8-wicket win in a 323-run chase.

In March 2019, the stadium hosted three T20Is between India Women and England Women; a series which the hosts clinched 3-0.

In January 2020, the T20I between India and Sri Lanka was abandoned due to wet pitch and outfield, which led to a lot of criticism.

The venue had to wait for another 2.5 years to host another international; a T20I against South Africa in October 2022, which proved to be a high-scoring affair.

In a recent ODI that took place in Guwahati, the fans were treated to an absolute delight as the legendary Virat Kohli smashed a whirlwind 87-ball 113 against Sri Lanka to set-up a 67-run win for the hosts, despite a magnificent 88-ball 108* from Dasun Shanaka.
