DRS will be used in IPL 2018 after BCCI approval
IPL will only be the second T20 league to make use of DRS.
What's the story?
The Indian Premier League will become only the second T20 League after the Pakistan Super League to have the Decision Review System (DRS). This comes after the BCCI finally gave the green signal to introduce DRS for IPL 2018 according to the Indian Express.
“The BCCI was keen to have DRS on board since quite some time but it was only this year we felt we should go ahead with it for the IPL. We have the best of all other systems in place, so why not DRS? Anyway we have been using it for India’s international matches for over a year and a half now,” a BCCI official said.
In case you didn't know...
BCCI had long been opposed to the DRS, claiming that the system isn't foolproof and it was only a year and a half ago, during England's tour of India that the board finally softened its stance and accepted the technology.
The heart of the matter
With the IPL on the horizon, the top 10 domestic umpires were called up for a session on DRS at Vizag in December. ICC umpires coach Denis Burns and umpire Paul Reiffel were flown in to brief the umpires about the technology, which will now be in use for the first time in the history of the IPL. Those 10 umpires will be officiating in the IPL.
“Indian domestic cricket doesn’t use the DRS system till date. As local umpires are being hired for the IPL, the board had called us to be briefed about the system. We were told that the board will be using DRS in IPL and they wanted us to get used to the technology,” one of the domestic umpires who attended the session said.
It will be interesting how the teams react to having the opportunity to use DRS in the IPL.
The introduction of technology is a great move by the BCCI especially considering the number of errors that can be cut down as a result of it. Teams were often complaining about the lack of technology that could have turned the game at crucial junctures and now they finally have their wish as they will be able to use DRS in IPL 2018.
