There was a huge tussle among all the eight franchises for acquiring the services of the former star English all-rounder, Andrew Flintoff during the 2009 IPL auctions. A player like Flintoff is an asset when it comes to the T20s and all the franchises realized his value and went for him at the auctions. He was at the peak of his career, especially during the latter half of the last decade. In the end, the Chennai Super Kings succeeded in signing the flamboyant Englishman for a then-record price of INR 7.35 crore.

Flintoff and his fellow teammate, Kevin Pietersen were the most expensive players of the second edition which took place in South Africa. But Freddie had a forgettable stint with the Men in yellow, playing just three games and leaving mid-way due to the knee injury. Flintoff scored 62 runs and took wickets in three matches he played for Chennai in the 2009 season. Nevertheless, it was just another season and another record auction signing by the Chennai Super Kings, who lost to the Royal Challengers in the semi-finals.
