South Africa and New Zealand share an intense rivalry in the ICC Cricket World Cup. However, the same cannot be the sad about their encounters at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The BlackCaps have locked horns with the Proteas on four instances at the global showpiece event and have lost on each occasion.

Their first meeting took place during a Super-8 encounter in the inaugural edition, where the host nation claimed a comprehensive six-wicket victory, thanks to Justin Kemp’s astounding 56-ball 89*.

Their next meeting in 2009 proved to be a high-competitive affair. However, the BlackCaps once again failed to beat the Men in Green as they failed to chase down 128 on what was a very slow wicket at the Home of Cricket.

A highly disciplined bowling performance-led by Roelof van der Merve (2/14 in four) helped the South Africans eke out a one-run victory.

A year later, both sides met again in the marquee event, but once again New Zealand failed to claim a victory over their nemesis. The Daniel Vettori-led unit failed to chase down 171, falling short by 13 runs.

Their final encounter at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup (to date) proved to be a humdinger, but one the BlackCaps should have won. Chasing 171, the Kiwis needed just 7 runs in the final over, and with Ross Taylor (62 off 37) and Luke Ronchi at the crease, victory looked like a foregone conclusion.

However, the legendary Dale Steyn channelized his inner best as he dished out yorkers for fun to help his side escape with a stunning two-run victory.
