Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are without young pace sensation Mayank Yadav for their IPL 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday, April 23.
On the eve of the game, bowling coach Morne Morkel said that Lucknow are confident of Mayank being fit for the home game against Rajasthan Royals on April 27. The 21-year-old made a sensational IPL debut, claiming 3-27 against Punjab Kings and 3-14 versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru..
The right-arm pacer bowled only one over against Gujarat Titans in the home match played on April 7. He walked off the field due to soreness in lower abdominal area and has been out of action since then. Giving a fitness update on Mayank ahead of the away clash against CSK, Morkel said:
"He stayed behind in Lucknow just to give him that extra two-three days without travelling. He is with (assistant coach) Lance Klusener and the rest of the guys in Lucknow, training and getting ready. So I think, anything from the next game onwards, we'll look to bring him back in."
Mayank was the Player of the Match in his first two IPL 2024 games against PBKS and RCB respectively. Against Punjab, he got the wickets of Jonny Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma to derail their chase of 200.
The youngster dismissed Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green and Rajat Patidar as LSG beat RCB by 28 runs in Bengaluru.
"He's coming along very nicely" - Morkel on Mayank's recovery from injury
In the games against Punjab and Bengaluru, Mayank consistently hit the 150 kph mark.
However, he was down on pace due to fitness issues in the only over he bowled against Gujarat. Elaborating on the fast bowler's recovery, Morkel asserted that the team is happy with the progress he has been making.
"He's coming along very nicely. We're very happy with his progression. He started bowling three-four days ago, so for him it's just a matter now, of course of him, the expectation is greater, (given) that he bowls every ball at 150 kmph," Morkel said.
"It's just to really get his body and his mind in that sort of state where he's confident, running and bowling all four overs at a tight pace," the former South African fast bowler concluded.
One of the promising fast bowlers in India, Delhi-born Mayank has played one first-class match, 17 List A games and 13 T20s.
