Michael Schumacher Accident

On December 29, 2013, a Formula 1 legend, Michael Schumacher, was involved in a traumatic brain injury while skiing with his family in Meribel, France. The Formula 1 legend was known for his skills on the slopes as he skied off-piste along areas of unmarked trails. In an attempt to stop another skier, Schumacher flew into the air on hitting a rock and in doing so, hit his head upon a second rock, 10 meters distant. This proved nearly fatal when the impact cracked Schumacher's helmet in two, despite him wearing one. He regained consciousness shortly after but was speaking incoherently and acting erratically, such that emergency responders called in for an airlift to a local hospital. Schumacher was first treated at a nearby Moutiers hospital before being transferred to a specialist trauma unit at the University Hospital of Grenoble. It was already quite apparent that Schumacher's injuries were severe. He was put into a medically induced coma to stabilize his brain swelling and received emergency surgery to stop him from bleeding in the head. Medical experts said that had Schumacher not been wearing a helmet, the accident would have killed him. According to Jean-Francois Payen, head of anesthetics at the hospital, the helmet "definitely saved his life."Still, his prospects were hard to read, and his health was deemed "extremely serious."Schumacher, for nearly six months, was kept in a medically induced coma and was still fighting for his life, surrounded by family and close friends. Included among those at his bedside were his wife Corinna, his children Mick and Gina-Maria, and his former Ferrari team boss, Jean Todt. The world of motorsports was shocked and sad over the news, even one of Schumacher's toughest competitors in Formula 1, Mika Hakkinen, voiced support. By June 2014, Schumacher had slowly been taken out of the coma and transferred to a rehabilitation center in Lausanne, Switzerland. His recovery remained slow with continuous challenges

What is the current condition of Michael Schumacher?

Schumacher since then has continued his recovery at home in the family's residences in Switzerland and Majorca. The family is highly private and has shared limited information about his health condition since the accident. In recent times, quite a few scattered reports and public appearances include watching his daughter Gina-Maria tie the knot with her man in September of 2024 but little is known of his mental and bodily aptitude. Michael was seen walking his daughter down the aisle during an ultra-private do at the family's villa in Majorca, Schumacher allegedly smiled and watched his daughter walk down the aisle during the wedding, a rare public appearance that brought hope to many fans.Despite the mystery of his illness, Schumacher's family sometimes allows the public to catch glimpses of his private life with him. Ahead of his 54th birthday this January 2023, Mick Schumacher, his son, now driving for Formula 1, took to social media to post an emotional tribute to his father. He posted a childhood photo of himself with Michael as well as a more notable classic shot of Michael at the wheel, captioning it: "Happy birthday to the best Dad ever. Love you!
