The Zurich Classic of New Orleans, the only official team tournament on the PGA Tour, is returning for its seventh year. This time, seven of the top 20 players in the field at the TPC Louisiana are ranked in the Official World Golf Ranking. World No. 2 Rory McIlroy is the highest-ranked player competing for the fourth straight week.
Starting on April 25, four balls (the best shot) will be played on Thursday and Saturday in this competition. On the other hand, foursomes, or alternative shots, will be played on Friday and Sunday. Here are the top five players who might be closer to winning the cup than anybody else in Avondale, where a team of two will prevail!
Celebrity Pairings at the New Orleans Zurich Classic
Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy: After deciding to work together over a "drunken lunch," the Northern Irishman and the Irish professional will undoubtedly become fans' favourites at TPC Louisiana because they both have a tonne of Ryder Cup experience under their belts. The World No. 2 has been working hard to improve, though, and taking part in the Zurich Classic was another method to step up his game. Thus far in the 2024 season, Lowry and McIlroy have each finished in the top 25 ten times. The Zurich Classic might be more appropriate for them as past partners.
Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay: The Zurich Classic 2022 was previously won by the world's top two seeds, Nos. 4 and 8. In that particular year, Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay were victorious, scoring 29 under 259. The pair got close to winning in 2023 as well. Last year, they ranked fourth on the scoreboard and were just four strokes away from winning the championship again. Schauffele has been playing significantly better than most PGA Tour players heading into 2024. He competed in nine events, finishing in the top 10 in seven of them. However, Cantlay is not any less.
Kurt Kitayama and Collin Morikawa: Collin Morikawa was three strokes shy of winning his first Masters last week, tied for third. Furthermore, Morikawa has three top-15 finishes before the 88th Masters. Kurt Kitayama, his playing companion, is now added. The Japanese professional has recorded four top 25 finishes and has been striving steadily to finish inside the top 25. While playing with Max Homa last year, Morikawa could not make the cut, while Kitayama and Taylor Montgomery advanced to the T19 round. Perhaps this year, the two Asians will pull off the unexpected and take home the Zurich Classic trophy.
Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick: At the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, the Fitzpatrick siblings are one of three other sibling pairs, along with Nicolai, Rasmus Hojgaard, Pierceson, and Parker Coody. Matt Fitzpatrick, meanwhile, is a member of the PGA Tour and qualified due to his several wins. Alex Fitzpatrick will play on a sponsor's exemption and does not currently hold a PGA Tour membership. In contrast to his younger sibling, the two-time PGA Tour winner has been in good form, placing four times in the top 15. The brothers made their Zurich Classic debut in 2023 and placed T19. With improved form this year, the two might win significantly.
Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala: Will Zalatoris, who missed the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last year because of an injury, will participate this year. Conversely, Sahith Theegala will be visiting TPC Louisiana for the third time. Lately, they have both been performing well. They have nine top-15 results and both finished in second place at least once thus far in the 2024 season. Zalatoris at the Genesis Invitational and Theegala at the Sentry. The two might just alter the course and win everything at Avondale.
