GTA Online has been running for a long time, and it's time that Rockstar pulls the plug on PS4 and Xbox One support. There are many reasons why this might be a smart move that would allow the title to move forward and bring about major changes. It would also make sense as a modern-day live-service AAA game since many players have already moved to next-gen consoles or plan to do so.

In light of this, we've got five reasons why GTA Online shouldn't be running on PS4 and Xbox anymore. This also means that the game should move on to next-gen consoles—the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S—if it intends to stay on.

Why GTA Online shouldn't support PS4 and Xbox One anymore

1) They're pretty old by now

As of July 2024, the PS4 and Xbox One are quite old, even though a large number of players are still active on the former console. PlayStation 4 was first introduced in 2013, the same year as Grand Theft Auto 5 and its online multiplayer mode. Xbox One also followed suit, entering the market only a few days later.

Almost a decade has passed since then, so both these consoles are as old as GTA Online itself. If the game wants to go forward, it has to ditch support for these machines.

2) PS3 and Xbox 360 support discontinued

Rockstar has already discontinued support for GTA Online on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, although these were considered last-gen even when the game came out. This means that they've stopped all updates for the game on these platforms.

Rockstar is also releasing more and more exclusive features and content for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players which PS4 and Xbox One players don't have access to. As such, it's time that the game officially stops support for these older consoles completely instead of leaving new features out of it.

3) Players are moving to the next-gen

A large number of gamers are moving on to the next-gen consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The number of active users on PS4 and Xbox One has been slowly decreasing, and soon, it is expected to drop down significantly.

If GTA Online expects to thrive even after Grand Theft Auto 6 comes out, it must move to next-gen consoles. As such, supporting the game on old-gen consoles will slowly get more and more pointless.

4) Next-gen would allow for major upgrades

The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version of GTA Online already has some graphical upgrades, and Rockstar has been periodically adding small improvements. For instance, they added wildlife to Grand Theft Auto Online on the next-gen version recently.

On top of that, some minor quality-of-life improvements, which have been introduced exclusively for this version, suggest that Rockstar intends to make more upgrades. The game could be completely altered in the coming years, something which wouldn't be possible on last-gen consoles.

5) The game would continue after GTA 6

The next big title that Rockstar fans are awaiting is Grand Theft Auto 6, and it will be released in Fall 2025 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. If GTA Online discontinues last-gen support and lives on only in next-gen consoles, it could accompany GTA 6 and extend its lifespan even further.

Take-Two will undoubtedly want to keep the game alive for as long as possible. As such, discontinuing support on PS4 and Xbox One would be the natural step forward.
