Iron golems are an incredibly useful mob, mostly due to their use in Minecraft iron farms. But their ability to attack hostile mobs, as well as aggro slimes, make them nearly essential to late-game players. They are also interesting in that they are one of the only mobs that players can summon on command. This is possible by putting a carved pumpkin on top of a "T" made of four iron blocks.

But what if a player didn't even need to do that to summon a fiercely loyal Minecraft survival base protector? Well, Reddit user u/Mnmnklk made a redstone machine that builds iron golems automatically and shared it with the Minecraft subreddit.

The inner workings of the machine are, as redstone often is, complex to those without redstone knowledge and commonplace to those with it. The core of the machine is a two-block extender, with pistons on either side to add to the arms. Then, a delayed redstone pulse is sent to the dispenser with the carved pumpkin in it. This places the pumpkin and causes the iron golem to spawn.

Mnmnklk comments on the post that it's vital that the pumpkin dispenses after the iron is placed. They don't explain why, but it is because if the pumpkin is placed before the iron, the iron golem never forms. The check happens when the pumpkin is placed. Thus, if it's placed before the iron, no golem appears.

User u/PhantomOrigin points out in a comment that the frame of the build is very similar to a Minecraft 3x3 piston door. This should give any players wanting to recreate the build in a game a great place to start, as tutorials for 3x3 piston doors are quite common; they are a great starter redstone project.

User u/RealTimeWarfare didn't even know it was possible to use redstone machinery to automate the creation of golems. They assumed that Mojang Studios had made it impossible, so it was surprising to see the system done so simply.

Is an Iron Golem Machine worth building in Minecraft survival?

Ultimately, a machine like this is probably impractical for survival. At least if the purpose of it is to aid in survival.

As mentioned, Iron golems, while incredibly useful for dropping iron and defending from hostile Minecraft mobs, aren't hard to construct quickly by hand. The fact that the machine would need to be reloaded by hand after every iron golem reduces the potential efficiency of the automation.

The build is, inarguably, a cool showpiece and satisfying to see in action. It's worth building as part of a fully featured Minecraft mega base, but not an essential redstone build to consider for survival.
