For over a decade, there was no way of protecting the tamed wolf from hostile mobs. While there were mods that would add armor for the wolf, Minecraft players sorely needed something that would add a protective layer, just like the horse had. Finally, the wait is over and while the developers have been late, they have come prepared.

The wolf armor not only gives great protection to the tamed wolf against projectile and melee damage (but not against magic and potions), but it is also customizable; this opens a plethora of opportunities for the players. The armor can be dyed and there are millions of unique combinations that can be created.

Coming to the wolf variants, Mojang Studios also added eight variants of the wolves that are not only different visually, but also spawn in different biomes and different pack sizes. Players do not need to worry as the classic wolf will be in the game; it has been renamed to pale wolf.

The other wolf variants that have been added include:

  • The rusty wolf spawns in the jungle biome.
  • The pale wolf (default wolf) now spawns in the taiga biome.
  • The striped wolf spawns in wooded badlands.
  • The snowy wolf spawns in groves.
  • The ashen wolf spawns in the snowy taiga.
  • The wood wolf spawns in forests.
  • The chestnut wolf spawns in old-growth spruce taiga.
  • The spotted wolf spawns in the savanna plateau.
  • The black wolf spawns in old-growth pine taiga.

Finally, coming to the next big thing in the update, the armadillo is now officially present in the game. It can be found in the savannah and badlands biomes. This also makes these barren biomes more interesting and gives players a reason to explore them more.

The armadillo rolls up when it sees any threat, which includes players running towards it. So approaching it slowly would be the best strategy. Brushing the armadillo gives scutes, which can be used to make the wolf armor. The armadillo also drops scutes occasionally.
