The Minecraft movie has been in development for a long time — since 2014, in fact, when Warner Bros. first started working on a movie based on the industry-changing game. The project has had quite a tumultuous history, going through directors, writers, and stars several times. Things seem to finally be calming down, with filming having wrapped up recently.

One of the most interesting and exciting casting choices for this movie is Jack Black, who also starred in the recent Super Mario Bros. movie as Bowser. He has just confirmed fan speculation that he would be playing the game's iconic character, Steve, through a comedic video posted to his Instagram.

The post's details, as well as everything else confirmed about the Minecraft movie, can be found below.

Jack Black confirms his role as Minecraft's Steve

Jack Black's post exudes comedic energy, passion for performing, and excitement all at once. In the video, he is singing about a rainbow in the sky. He walks towards his trailer, stopping to film the "Steve" tag on his door before entering. After that, the camera focuses on different images of Steve. Black then cuts to his face before the video ends.

The implications here are crystal clear — Jack Black literally walked into a room labeled Steve, looked at pictures of Steve, and then cut to his own face.

This confirmation comes a few months after he posted an image of himself reading a book on the game's basics to his Instagram in January 2024. There had been some speculation as to what role he might play in the film, with the loudest rumor involving Steve.

Everything known about the Minecraft Movie

In April 2023, Warner Bros. confirmed that the Minecraft movie would see an April 4, 2025, release date. At the time, this was the latest in a long history of updates regarding the movie. Given that filming for Minecraft successfully wrapped in April 2024, things seem to be moving ahead in a way that makes an early 2025 launch possible.

The director of the movie is Jared Hess, known for directing hit classics such as Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. The other confirmed members of the cast thus far are Jason Mamoa, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Emma Myers, Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon, and Jamaine Clement.

The only two actors with confirmed roles are Danielle Brooks as Dawn and Sebastian Eugene Hansen as Henry, though not much is actually known about the characters they're playing.

Since the recently released Five Night's at Freddy's movie featured popular content creators, it will be interesting to see if the Minecraft movie follows suit by featuring similar personalities as fun cameos for the audience.

Warner Bros. and the cast have been incredibly quiet about the film's plot. There's a project summary on the film's FTIA production tracking list from 2023 that relates to a group of adventurers needing to set out to save the overworld from Minecraft's infamous ender dragon final boss.

Though this summary is from 2023 and the film has already gone through several revamps during its development, there's no guarantee that this synopsis is still accurate.
