"The Destiny world feels lifeless": Destiny 2 community weighs in on Witness and empty Pyramid ships

The underwhelming nature of the build-up to Destiny 2's final expansion is pretty evident from the review scores and the community uproar. The launch of Lightfall started the downfall of the once-beloved looter-shooter title, which has now been pulled down to a shell of its former glory. Even with a steady player count every day, fans do not feel the same excitement after logging in to the game.

A recent post on Reddit by /u ElyarSol highlights the issue well, and other community members came forward to share their thoughts in the comments. The main post, titled "Anyone Not Interested In The Witness/Black Fleet?", states:

"Now that we know they are lifeless and also due to how unimpressive the Witness is, I feel nothing where I used to feel dread and anticipation. The Destiny world feels lifeless and non-threatening."

Destiny 2 community shares disappointment with the Witness and the once-mysterious Pyramids

The Pyramids were the driving force of the Destiny 2 narrative. Bungie has been building the story of the black fleet ever since the Shadowkeep expansion in 2019. However, things started to change for the worse when players were allowed to board the ships.

The Witch Queen expansion allowed Guardians to enter a Pyramid for the first time via a campaign quest and the Vow of the Disciple Raid.

However, shattering everyone's expectations, the Lightfall campaign also showcased the empty insides of a Pyramid ship, where many expected the presence of something more significant to the story.

Here is what /u ElyarSol had to say about the whole situation:

"Before the lead up to Lightfall, every time I heard that infamous darkness riff, or that ambient screeching noise, or anything related to the ships, I always got a chill down my spine.
"So far the biggest gripes I have seen, or most frequent, are that the Witness was poorly implemented and has insufficient character development, and that the pyramid fleet ships are all empty. I very much agree with both, especially the latter. I was so pumped during season of arrivals. Haven’t been excited again since."

Adding to the Pyramids, the reveal of Witness at the end of The Witch Queen campaign made the expansion a hundred times better for most players. It was the reveal of the saga's biggest villain, making it a big deal for veterans and new players. However, as the game stands, more than half of the community couldn't care less for the Witness.

Other players came into the post, calling it a "villain problem," as the entire Destiny 2 Lightfall campaign only showed five minutes of the actual antagonist.

A lot is riding on Destiny 2's The Final Shape, as players still believe Bungie will deliver one final time. However, it remains to be seen whether the final product will be anything worth the hype or just be nostalgia bait.
