First-person shooter (FPS) is a subgenre of shooter video games in which the player experiences the action through the eyes of the character. The gameplay focuses on gun and other weapon-based combat in a first-person perspective. Here the player experiences the action through the character’s eyes and controls the player character in 3D space. They differ from third-person shooters in that the player can see the character they are controlling in a third-person shooter from a third-person perspective.

In its early days this sub-genre was referred to as corridor shooting due to the limitations of the era's hardware as most action games took place in enclosed spaces like corridors or alley ways. In the 21st century, the first-person shooter is the most commercially viable video game genre, accounting for more than 27 percent of all video game sales in 2016.

First-person shooters, like most shooter games, feature an avatar, slew of weapons, and a varying number of enemies. These games are more realistic as they take place in a 3D environment. It is common for the main view to show the character's hands and weaponry, with a heads-up display showing health, ammunition, and location information.
