With the best Ajax build in The First Descendant, you get a tank who is able to defend his teammates while also ensuring the best survivality for himself. While Ajax isn’t the best DPS in the game, he can still more than hold his own. He shines as a tank with a kit that allows him to deflect shots and also has an amazing stun which can knock back the opponents. Once you’ve given Ajax a spin, you’ll understand why he’s so much fun to play.
While he was only B-Tier on our character tier list, it’s because he lacks damage compared to some other characters. He also lacks decent DoTs (damage over time). If you put him in a party with a powerful damage dealer, he suddenly becomes far more potent and enjoyable. Ajax is definitely a character in The First Descendant that you play with friends.
Note that the build guidelines shared here also applies to Ultimate Ajax, as it is essentially the same Descendant in a shiny new coat of paint.

The First Descendant Ajax skill breakdown
Ajax’s kit is based on defense and survivability in The First Descendant. While this is incredibly great for dealing with powerful foes, he lacks when it comes to damage. His damage is based off of having enough Void Power to make his shields deflect incoming damage. That said, if you bring an ally with him, he can really shine.
His Expulsion ability knocks back enemies, and Void Walk lets you leap and stun anyone that is nearby when you land. You have two shield-generating abilities, in Orbit Barrier (in front of Ajax) and Hyper Cube (Dome Shield). The name of the game with Ajax is keeping foes away from the party, so they can thrash enemies with their higher DPS.

All Ajax Skill Modules in The First Descendant
Ajax has some pretty interesting unique Skill Modules in The First Descendant. You can use Expulsion to buff allies while also knocking back enemies, or you can buff Void Walk and Expulsion damage based on your Defense, through Void Charge. You can find the specific unique Skill Modules below, and the Socket they use:
- Body Enhancement (Almandine): Void Energy is no longer available through Event Horizon. Increases DEF and Energy Shield proportionally to Max HP.
- Matrix Recomputation (Cerulean): Modifies Expulsion to cast a buff that helps allies survive.
- Void Burst (Cerulean): On using Expulsion, decreases Sub Attack Cooldown and increases its Damage.
- Void Charge (Almandine): Modifies Void Walk and Expulsion damage to increase proportionally to DEF.

Best Leveling build for Ajax
At the moment, we are focusing on these for the best Ajax build in The First Descendant:
- Increased DEF
- Increased HP
- Shortsword
- Skill Expansion
- Technician
Generally, for your leveling build, you want defensive stats, skill range, and then some skill power in that order. Ajax just doesn't have enough nuke potential when you pick him up as your starter class in The First Descendant. However, a little skill power is still somewhat necessary.
Best end-game Ajax build in The First Descendant
Ajax needs mainly Skill cooldown to get out his barriers as many times as needed. While we're on that, do not mod for ability duration on Ajax - as the barrier ability is very static, and you will often need to readjust position as your squad moves.
Transcendant Module: Many swear by Matrix Recomputation, but we use Body Enhancement to make Ajax the tankiest boy he was meant to be.
The following would be the best build to use on Ajax in The First Descendant's endgame:
- Body Enhancement: Increases DEF and Energy Shield proportionally to Max HP.
- Increased DEF/Skill Expansion (based on whether you want to be more tanky or have a little bit more range for your abilities to give your allies some QoL)
- Focus on Tech: Increases Tech Skill power, decreases Cooldown
- Iron Defense: Increases DEF and Skill power
- Non-Attribute Synctium: Increases Critical Hit resistance and Non-attribute Skill power
- Dimension Master: Increases Skill power and Non-attribute Skill power
- Shortsword/Dual Claw: Sub attack module, increases module capacity.
- Time Distribution: Increases Max HP and decreases Skill cooldown
- Stim Accelerant: Massively Increases HP but decreases MP. Do not use if you find yourself running into MP issues often.
- Increased HP
- Increased Shield
Ajax's skills cost a lot of MP to use, but you can still get away with low max MP if you have enough regen. Even with Skill cooldown reduction, Ajax doesn't spam them nearly enough for you to worry about MP in your day-to-day activities. Ultimately, it’s up to you what to pick, so if these don’t work for you, adjust accordingly.
Best Ajax Loadout in The First Descendant
For the best Ajax build in The First Descendant, you need to also focus on the right equipment combination, along with the Skill modules. The following loadout is what we recommend:
Best weapon to use for Ajax
Secret Garden is easily the best gun to pair up with an Ajax build in The First Descnednat. This Tactical Rifle runs on Special Rounds, and while its stats are impressive, the Gardener Unique skill is what really benefits us.
- Gardener gives you back Void Energy when you cast your first or fourth ability, making resource management more lenient on Ajax.
- Casting your second or third skill gives you the stackable Pest Control buff, which gives you additional Skill power and weapon damage.
Note that you can increase the trigger rate (proc chance) of both buffs by Enhancing the unique ability through the Workbench.
You can also use Albion Cavalry Gun on your Ajax loadout. This General Rounds Machine Gun gives you a chance to perma-stun most enemies if you cast Void Walk (second ability) on them, and then start shooting them to perpetuate the status.
Best Reactor to use for Ajax
The absolute best Reactor to put on Ajax build in The First Descendant is going to be Materialized Mechanics. Reactors with this roll increase Tech Power and Non-Attribute Skill power, which is what benefits Ajax the most.
If you haven't found a Materialized Mechanics Reactor yet, just look for any Reactor with the Materialized Prefix, as Non-Attribute Skill power gives you more bang for you bucks.
Those who want to min-max further can always Enhance their Reactors with Ion Accelerators, and look for firearm ATK, MP, and MP regen stat rolls.
Best External Components to use on Ajax
As one of the frontliners of The First Descendant, any Ajax build does well with defensive stats on External Components. That said, you want the following stats as your priority to balance out the Ajax Module build provided in this guide:
- MP
- MP recovery
- Shield recovery
- Max Shield
- Max DEF
