Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was born on October 2, 1987, in Memphis, Tennessee in the United States. He was brought up in Olive Branch, Mississippi. Stenhouse Jr. became the first Mississippi driver after Lake Speed in 1997 to race full-time in the Cup Series. Stenhouse Jr. started with dirt cars but switched to stock car racing in 2008. He began racing in the karting series. He had acquired nearly 47 wins and 90 Top-10s by the time he started sprint car racing in 2003.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. achieved the Rookie of the Year honors in 2003 in the Dirt Winged Sprint Car series. He went on to achieve two Rookie of the Year awards in the same year for the USAC Sprint Car and Midget series in 2007.
