Stenhouse Jr. became the first Mississippi driver after Lake Speed in 1997 to race full-time in the Cup Series. Stenhouse Jr. started with dirt cars but switched to stock car racing in 2008. He began racing in the karting series. He had acquired nearly 47 wins and 90 Top-10s by the time he started sprint car racing in 2003.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. achieved the Rookie of the Year honors in 2003 in the Dirt Winged Sprint Car series. He went on to achieve two Rookie of the Year awards in the same year for the USAC Sprint Car and Midget series in 2007. Stenhouse Jr. achieved 6th and 3rd place in the drivers standings for the Sprint Car and Midget series respectively. He switched to the ARCA Racing Series in 2008 with Roush Fenway Racing. He won his first race in the series in the sixth race start. Stenhouse Jr. finished 4th in the driver standings as a Rookie.
