Even before Ryan Newman made his NASCAR debut, he had been a seasoned USAC racer with dominant victories in the Silver Crown, Sprint Car, and Midget divisions. Moreover, Newman also had the 1999 Silver Crown Championship title under his belt.

Thanks to his natural talent and a few golden pieces of advice from the legendary Buddy Baker, Newman made his first-ever start in the Cup Series in 2000. The following year, he started competing in the Xfinity Series.

From 2000 to 2008, Newman drove for Roger Penske's Cup team, and while doing that, he picked up 13 wins and 43 pole awards. His first top-tier race win came on Sept. 15, 2002, at New Hampshire Motor Speedway when he drove the number 12 Altel/Mobi1 car to the victory lane.

In 2009, Newman moved to Stewart-Haas Racing. After a five-year stint with the Ford team, Newman finally joined Richard Childress Racing in 2014 as the driver of the #31 Caterpillar Chevrolet.

The same year, he finished second behind Kevin Harvick, who won the Cup Series Championship. Over the next five years, Newman amassed one victory, a whopping 63 top 10s, 19 top fives, and three playoff appearances.

Newman returned to driving Fords in 2019 as he shook hands with Roush Fenway Racing (now RFK Racing). Behind the wheel of the number 6 Ford, Newman recorded 16 top-10 finishes and also reserved a playoff berth. He exited from the Cup arena after a harrowing crash at the 2020 Daytona 500 only to return in 2023, driving in selected races for Rick Ware Racing. This year, he will be driving full-time in the SMART Modified Tour.

Who is Greg Newman?

Perhaps the person to have the biggest influence on Newman was his father, Greg. Newman's father had always wanted to be a driver but he couldn't. Therefore, he did everything he could to ensure that his son could become a driver. “He’s been with me for every step of my career since I was four and a half and just starting to race Quarter Midgets,” said Newman, recalling his dad's contribution back when he was younger and just starting his racing career.
