Cody Garrett Runnels Rhodes is an American professional wrestler. He is best known for his work with WWE and AEW. He is a former three-time TNT Champion in AEW and two-time Intercontinental Champion in WWE.

Professional Wrestling Career


WWE (2006-2016)


Early Years, Legacy, and Dashing Cody (2006-2010)


In 2006, Rhodes began wrestling for OVW, where he formed a team with Shawn Spears and won the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship. After losing the titles, Rhodes won the OVW Heavyweight Championship and feuded with Spears. Rhodes dropped the title to Spears before moving to the main roster. In 2007, Rhodes made his main roster debut and feuded with Randy Orton but lost.


After feuding with Hardcore Holly, Holly teamed up with Rhodes and won the World Tag Team Championship. In 2008, Rhodes turned on Holly and teamed up with Ted DiBiase JR to become a two-time champion. By the end of the year, Rhodes and DiBiase joined Orton to form The Legacy. The team helped Orton to win the Royal Rumble and WWE Championship at Royal Rumble and Backlash, respectively.


At Breaking Point, the team defeated the DX. In 2010, the group disbanded and faced each other in a triple threat at WrestleMania XXVI, where Orton defeated Rhodes and DiBiase. After Mania, they drafted Rhodes to SmackDown, where he changed his gimmick. He went as Dashing Cody Rhodes.

Shattered and Intercontinental Champion (2011-2013)


After a match with Rey Mysterio, Cody broke his nose, which led to him changing his character. Rhodes returned and began feuding with Rey Mysterio. At WrestleMania XXVII, Rhodes defeated Rey Mysterio. In August, Rhodes defeated Ezekiel Jackson to win the Intercontinental Championship. Cody remained the champion for 233 days before losing it to The Big Show at WrestleMania XXVIII.


In September, he formed a team with Damien Sandow called Rhodes Scholar. The team became quite popular but couldn't win the tag titles. In 2013, the team broke up when Sandow turned on Rhodes. At SummerSlam, Rhodes defeated Sandow to end the feud. In October, Cody began teaming up with Goldust to fight for their father, Dusty Rhodes, against the Authority. Cody Rhodes and Goldust defeated The Shield twice and won the WWE Tag Team Championship.

Stardust and Final Run (2014-2016)


After failing as the tag team partner of Goldust, Cody rebranded himself as Stardust. The duo worked well and defeated several teams. At Night of Champions, Gold and Stardust defeated The Usos to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. At Survivor Series, they lost the title to The Miz and Damien Mizdow.


After a series of losses, Stardust turned on Goldust. At Fastlane, Goldust defeated Stardust. The rivalry concluded on RAW, when Stardust defeated Goldust and attacked Dusty Rhodes. Stardust answered John Cena's US Open challenge and lost.


In 2015, Stardust feuded with Stephen Amell. At SummerSlam, Stardust and Wade Barrett faced Neville and Stephen Amell and lost. In September, he formed a faction called The Cosmic Wasteland with the Ascension. Stardust took part in two ladder matches for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 31 and 32, but lost. In 2016, they wrote Stardust off, and they released Cody Rhodes from his contract.

Independent Circuit (2016-2019)


After they released Rhodes, he began working on the independent circuit and worked for several top promotions, such as Impact Wrestling, ROH, and NJPW. Cody changed his look and called himself "The American Nightmare" Cody. He won several accolades and championships such as ROH World Championship, ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship, NWA World Heavyweight Championship, and the IWGP United States Championship during his time in these promotions.

AEW (2019-2022)


In 2019, Cody was announced as one of the Executive Vice Presidents for AEW. At Double or Nothing, Cody defeated Dustin Rhodes. He defeated Shawn Spears at All Out. When MJF threw in the towel at Full Gear, he lost to Chris Jericho. At Revolution, MJF defeated Cody. At Double or Nothing, Cody defeated Lance Archer to become the inaugural TNT Champion. In August, he lost the title to Mr. Brodie Lee. In September, he reclaimed the title after defeating Lee in a dog collar match.


At Full Gear, he lost the title to Darby Allin. In 2021, he teamed with Red Velvet and lost to Shaquille O'Neal and Jade Cargill. He spent the year feuding with QT Marshall and Anthony Ogogo, where he won. In August, he began feuding with Malakai Black and lost. He won his third title in December by defeating Sammy Guevera. In January, he lost the title back to Guevera. In February, Cody and Brandi Rhodes left AEW.

WWE (2022-Present)


At WrestleMania 38, Cody Rhodes returned and defeated Seth Rollins. Following that on the WrestleMania Backlash event, Rollins challenged Rhodes for a rematch where Cody secured a victory over him for the second instance. The rivals were set to face again for the third time at Hell In A Cell event. Before the live event, Rollins viciously attacked Cody which led Cody having a torn pectoral muscles. Despite the injury, Cody insisted on competing in the match, where the American Nightmare emerged victorious. This was the end of their epic trilogy. On the RAW after HIAC, Seth Rollins attacked Rhodes and hasn't seen since.
