Rocky Johnson: A Brief Biography

Rocky Johnson was a Canadian professional wrestler. He is best known for his work with WWF and was the first black champion in the company's history. He is the father of WWE superstar, The Rock.

Professional Wrestling Career


NWA (1964–1982)


Johnson began his career as a professional wrestler in Ontario. He won several NWA Tag Team Championships. He wrestled as "Sweet Ebony Diamond" for a while.


WWF (1982-1985)


During his run, he feuded with Don Muraco, Greg Valentine, Mike Sharpe, Buddy Rose, and Adrian Adonis. He teamed up with Tony Atlas to form "The Soul Patrol" and won the WWF Tag Team Championship. They became the first black people in the company's history to become champions.

Final Days and Retirement (1985–1991)


After leaving WWF, he went to independent circuits and teamed up with Ricky Johnson. After retiring, he began training his son for a career in professional wrestling. At WrestleMania XIII, The Sultan and The Iron Sheik attacked him and he, along with his son, The Rock chased them away. In 2003, WWE hired him as a trainer for OVW. In 2008, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
