Sonny Gray's parents, Cindy and Jesse Grey, moved to Smyrna, Tennessee, before he started eighth school. Gray was born and raised in Nashville. Just before Grey began playing baseball for Smyrna High School in his freshman year of high school, his father passed away in an automobile accident.


He attended Smyrna High School and he played left field and pitched as a freshman, winning District 9AAA's Freshman of the Year award. He experienced injuries as a sophomore, which reduced his playing time. His junior year squad finished with an 11–2 win–loss record and a 0.95 earned run average (ERA), sending them to the 2007 State Tournament. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 2008 MLB draft however he chose to attend university. He enrolled at Vanderbilt University and played college baseball with the Vanderbilt Commodores Baseball team.
