5 times WWE Superstars did their opponent's finishing move

Seth Rollins stood tall over John Cena at Summerslam.

Undertaker and Kane use the same finishers because theyre storyline brothers. One common storytelling feature within a professional wrestling is the use of the opponents finisher in an effort to win and perhaps embarrass them at the same time. It has been done countless times over the years, with some well-known and others less so, but the surprise move always catches the audiences attention.Usually, this convention requires two high-profile stars, and if done properly, it can create a lot of excitement. Here are five times it happened, as well as the circumstances that made it worth noting.

#5 Seth Rollins AA

Seth Rollins stood tall over John Cena at Summerslam.

At Summerslam 2015, Seth Rollins squared off against John Cena in a title vs. title match, and he came out victorious to take home both titles. One thing that’s certain in a big match against Cena, though, is that one finisher won’t be enough.

That works just fine for Rollins, who has been known to use Eddie Guerrero’s Frog Splash, and he always uses Triple H’s Pedigree these days. But at Summerslam, he turned Cena’s own Attitude Adjustment on him, on the way to a victory aided by guest star Jon Steward.

#4 Piper Figure Four

Piper vs Flair

Rowdy Roddy Piper was one of the most beloved WWE superstars right up to his death in 2015. He and Ric Flair did battle in the WWE, and Piper also joined Flair in the WCW, but their battles included a Survivor Series match in 2001.

As part of that match, Piper locked in Flair’s signature Figure Four Leglock, which was often imitated. If not, opponents frequently rolled it over for a counter that Flair sold as though his leg was being ripped out of its socket. And that’s why he’s a legend.

#3 Chris Jericho Ankle Lock

Angle of reversals

Survivor Series 2001 was prime for this kind of activity. Chris Jericho, The Rock, The Undertaker, Kane and the Big Show teamed up for the WWE against the WCW/ECW team of Stone Cold, Kurt Angle, Rob Van Dam, Booker T and Shane McMahon. With all that star power in the ring, there were plenty of finishers to choose from.

Jericho took the first shot at an opponent’s signature hold when he hit Angle with an ankle lock. It didn’t last long, but it set the tone for a match that would also include a Stunner-Rock Bottom exchange.

#2 Rock-Austin

The Rock delivered Stone Cold’s signature Stunner multiple times.

The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin had perhaps the premier rivalry of WWE’s Attitude Era, and any time they went head to head, it was a marquee event. Another thing that could be counted on was an exchange of each other’s finishers.

Whether it was a singles match at Wrestlemania or within a Survivor Series matchup, The Rock would wind up kicking Austin in the gut to set up a Stunner, and then later, Austin would return the favor. Even more amazing was the fact that the concept never got old and seemed cool each time.

#1 Montreal Screwjob

Shawn Micheals gave Bret Hart a rude sendoff in the most controversial finish in WWE history.

This incident was so infamous and controversial that it got named – The Montreal Screwjob. With Bret Hart holding the WWF title and set to leave the company for WCW after a title match against Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1997, Vince McMahon had to make a move.

What followed has been the subject of more scrutiny and debate than perhaps anything in wrestling history. Michaels locked in Hart’s finisher, the Sharpshooter, and even though Hart never tapped, the bell rang and Michaels was ruled the winner.
