
Eric Heiden is a former American long-track speed skater, road cyclist, and track cyclist. During the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, United States, he set four Olympic records and one world record in addition to winning an unprecedented five gold medals as an individual. He is the most successful Winter Olympian from a single Winter Olympics edition.
Heiden, who is a physician by trade, started cycling as a second job after retiring from speed skating. He became well-known very fast, winning a United States Cycling Championship, and, a few years later, he competed in the 1986 Tour de France with the 7-11 team. In addition to being the team doctor for the American speedskating team at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, he has also previously worked as a sports analyst for CBS Sports.
