Tennis has been played as a sport for approximately 150 years; it was originally known as "sphairistike" when it was invented back in 1873 by British Major Walter Wingfield. It was also one of the few sports played at the first iteration of the modern Olympic Games in 1896 but was discontinued after 1924.

It took tennis 64 years to be recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a full medal sport. The reasons for this delay were that the IOC was unhappy that many of the world's best tennis players violated its strict definition of amateurism; further, Great Britain was worried that the Olympic events might take precedence over Wimbledon and did not want that to happen.

Regardless, even after tennis' inclusion at the Olympics in 1988, some of the best players then chose not to compete because they viewed it as less significant than events or because it got in the way of their preparation for the US Open Grand Slam, which is typically held around the same time.
