The Olympic events are incomplete without the prestigious medals. The medals play an important role in acknowledging the winners of different sports for their efforts. They also serve to encourage and motivate the athletes to continue their athletic careers. The most common forms of medals are the gold medals, the silver medals and the bronze medals.

However, the gold medal has the most significance in a sport during an Olympic event. This is because it is awarded to the best performer from each sport. Initially, the winners of a sport in the Olympics were awarded with a silver medal and an olive branch. The concept of awarding gold medals to the winners only started at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Since then, the practice of awarding gold medals to the winners has continued throughout the years. The design of the gold medals has also undergone various changes over the years to keep up with the host countries and cities.
