Several couples started this year working together in WWE. Nonetheless, nearly two months before the end of 2021, many of them have already left Vince McMahon's company.
WWE has released many superstars over the past 11 months. Its latest release spree came a few hours ago, in which more than 15 wrestlers left the company. Among those released are some of WWE's most famous couples.
Today, the WWE locker room has lost nearly eight wrestling couples since the start of 2021. Here are the three couples WWE released and the five the company split this year.
#8. Former WWE Superstars Scarlett Bordeaux and Karrion Kross (released)
Scarlett Bordeaux officially joined WWE two years ago. A few months later, her boyfriend Karrion Kross followed in her footsteps and signed with Vince McMahon's company.
The couple debuted together on NXT in May 2020. Throughout her run on NXT, Bordeaux only played the role of her boyfriend's valet and never competed inside the squared circle. Kross, on the other hand, became one of the top stars of WWE's third brand. He won the NXT Championship twice.
Kross started appearing on RAW last July. However, he continued to defend his NXT Championship on the Black and Gold Brand. Nonetheless, after losing his title to Samoa Joe at NXT TakeOver 36, Kross moved to RAW full-time.
When the former NXT Champion joined RAW, Bordeaux did not accompany him. The WWE Universe then started asking questions about her absence. Kross later addressed the issue on D-Von Dudley’s Table Talk podcast.
"This is what I can say, without being deliberately cryptic, we’re waiting for something to finish taking its course. But she is very good and she’s been training like a maniac, like she always does. You can expect to see her any time or any place," Kross said.
Despite what Kross said, Bordeaux never appeared again on WWE TV. The company announced the release of both superstars last Friday.
#7. WWE Superstar John Morrison and Franky Monet (split)
John Morrison returned to WWE in 2019 after a long absence. His wife, Franky Monet, also joined the company earlier this year. Although Morrison remains on RAW, Monet's WWE run has already ended.
The 38-year-old debuted on NXT last April. Since then, Monet has only competed in a few matches. Her most important one came against Raquel Gonzalez last September for the NXT Women's Championship. Nonetheless, Morrison's wife came up short.
Monet has not competed on NXT for nearly a month. WWE recently released the former IMPACT Knockouts Champion from her contract. She never had the chance to work with her husband in WWE.
#6. Former WWE Superstars Keith Lee and Mia Yim (released)
Keith Lee debuted on NXT in August 2018. He quickly became one of the top superstars on the brand, winning the NXT North American Championship and the NXT Championship.
Lee's fiancée, Mia Yim, also joined Vince McMahon's company. She debuted on NXT two months after Lee's debut. Although she had several shots at the NXT Women's Championship at live NXT events, Yim failed to capture the title.
Unlike Monet and Morrison, Yim and Lee worked together on WWE television. They got into a feud with Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae in 2020. Both couples squared off twice, and Lee and Yim lost each time.
Last year, both Lee and Yim moved from NXT to the main roster. Nevertheless, they failed to leave their mark. WWE released the couple from their contracts last Friday.
#5. WWE Women's Tag Team Champion Nikki A.S.H. and Killian Dain (split)
Nikki A.S.H. joined WWE in April 2016. Her husband, Killian Dain, also signed with the company later that same year. The two superstars became part of SAnitY and teamed up together in several matches.
During the 2018 WWE Superstar Shake-up, SAnitY, excluding Nikki, moved to SmackDown. However, the group's run on the Blue Brand lasted only a few months. In 2019, the faction officially disbanded, and Dain returned to NXT. Last June, WWE announced his release.
Nikki, nevertheless, remains in WWE and has had a lot of success on the main roster since her debut on SmackDown in November 2018. The 32-year-old has won the RAW Women's Championship once and the Women's Tag Team Titles three times. She currently holds the Women's Tag Titles alongside Rhea Ripley.
#4. WWE NXT Cruiserweight Champion Roderick Strong and Marina Shafir (split)
Like Nikki A.S.H, NXT Cruiserweight Champion Roderick Strong joined WWE in 2016. In the following years, he became part of The Undisputed Era and The Diamond Mine. The 38-year-old also won the NXT North American Championship once and the NXT Tag Team Titles multiple times.
In 2018, Strong's wife, Marina Shafir, joined him in NXT. However, she was not as successful as her husband and did not win any championships. Nonetheless, the couple shared the ring twice on NXT live shows.
In March 2019, they joined forces with Kyle O'Reilly to face Matt Riddle, Mia Yim, and Punishment Martinez but lost the match. Nine months later, Strong and Shafir competed against Matt Riddle and Rhea Ripley but again suffered defeat.
While WWE released Shafir from her contract last June, her husband continues to compete on NXT 2.0. He recently defeated Kushida to capture the NXT Cruiserweight Championship.
#3. Former WWE Superstars Bray Wyatt and JoJo Offerman (released)
Bray Wyatt joined WWE nearly 12 years ago. Despite suffering a few setbacks earlier in his career, he successfully established himself as a top superstar in the past few years. The 34-year-old introduced some of the best gimmicks in WWE history, like The Fiend. He also won several titles, including three World Championships.
Despite his accomplishments, WWE decided to release Wyatt last July. His final match came at WrestleMania 37 when he lost to Randy Orton.
Wyatt's girlfriend, JoJo, also left the company earlier this year. The 27-year-old worked as a ring announcer and backstage interviewer. Last August, reports revealed that WWE had also released JoJo from her contract.
#2. WWE Superstar Zelina Vega and Malakai Black (split)
WWE's releases have split up Zelina Vega and her husband Malakai Black (F.K.A. Aleister Black) twice. Following the 2020 Draft, Vega moved from RAW to SmackDown. However, WWE soon released her from her contract before she even stepped inside the ring.
Although she left, Vega's husband continued to work in WWE. He joined SmackDown after spending nearly a year on RAW. However, like his wife, the Dutch wrestler was released last June before competing on the Blue Brand.
A month after her husband's release, Vega returned to Vince McMahon's company, appearing on SmackDown. Nevertheless, the 2021 WWE Draft recently sent her back to RAW. Last month, she made history by winning the first-ever Queen's Crown tournament at Crown Jewel.
#1. WWE Superstar Charlotte Flair and Andrade El Idolo (split)
Charlotte Flair and Andrade El Idolo were one of the most famous WWE couples. Nonetheless, Andrade decided to leave WWE to look for success elsewhere.
As per his request, WWE granted the former United States Champion his release last March. His final match came against Angel Garza on RAW in October 2020, which he lost. Following his departure, Andrade joined AEW.
Andrade and Flair's love story started in WWE. Former superstar Karl Anderson introduced them. They even had their first date in catering at a WWE event. The couple has been together now for nearly two years. While Andrade is yet to win any gold in AEW, his fiancée continues her impressive WWE run. The Queen is currently the SmackDown Women's Champion.
Although they spent a few years together in Vince McMahon's company, Andrade and Flair never worked with each other on-screen. In a previous interview with TV Guide, The SmackDown Women's Champion revealed that she pitched the idea to the creative team. Nevertheless, nothing ever materialized.
